Disadvantages of mini ITX?

I am planning on building a new PC this summer so that I can take it to University with me, and I want it to take up as little space as possible. And I was wandering what the kind of disadvantages there are to using a mini ITX motherboard in the system. So if anyone has any ideas of what they are it would be a great help to let me know!

normally only 2 ram slots.

 

and 1 pci-e slot. so youll need a usb dongle if you need wifi if the board doesn't have it.

The size is hard to expand in and build in for that matter. Heat is also an issue. So overclocks might not be as high

The only real disadvantage of mini-itx is that you can only put in a single PCIe card. Not really a problem for most people since most people only have a single GPU in their system. The other disadvantage is that they do tend to cost more than their full sized brethren if you're looking for the same feature set (ie. M.2 support, Z chipset, list goes on)

When in doubt, re-format.

Id probably just get a laptop for college, much more portable. 

 

If you get something like a alienware 13, dell e5470, xps 15, razerblade, macbook pro 15, you have a system thats about as fast as a desktop and can be moved anywhere you wan.t

Only one PCIe slot, so you'll either need a mobo with built-in wifi or a USB dongle (not the end of the world; been using one for months on an HTPC). Only two RAM slots, but if you have 16GB in there, you're fine for a few years. No SLI, obviously. Cooling typically isn't as good unless you go for a monster like the NZXT Manta, so don't expect to shoot for the moon on overclocks. You might also be faced with wacky requirements, like an SFX power supply, and cable management is a beast on steroids if you don't go for a modular PSU.

 

Advantages? Compact system that saves a ton of room on the desk, looks awesome, and draws a lot of, "Whoa, really?" reactions when you mention that that's your CPU.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.

I can think of a few, having built two mITX systems as my primary computer

  • Parts tend to be costlier per "stuff". Mini-ITX boards can cost as much as ATX boards. On the flipside, most higher end Mini ITX boards I've seen always come with Wi-Fi.
  • The motherboard has less I/O ports. You're usually stuck with one PCIe x16 slot, two RAM slots, 4-6 SATA ports, and an M.2 slot (if you're unlucky, the smaller 2260 one).
  • Cases can be hard to work in since they're cramped and larger ones may as well be micro ATX cases.
  • If you get a really small mini ITX case, you need to get an SFX power supply, which can be costly.

However, my justification for the first two points: I'm using more of my system more. I'd rather be happy knowing I'm using 90% of my ports than 50%.

 

One thing that is not a problem: cooling. Well, except for smaller cases where you might be limited to the cooling setup you can use. However, I've not had a problem with cooling or overheating and lots of Mini ITX cases are well ventilated. If you want to call BS on me, my current build happily sits at mid 30s in a upper 20s ambient environment with minimal fans. Once I put a load on it, the CPU rarely gets above 65C and the GPU tops out at about 75C. And the computer still doesn't sound like a leaf blower.
