M.2 SSD and gaming?

Can't find info for this anywhere- just M.2 performance in general. WoW forums aren't helping.

 

I have a Samsung Evo 850.. great load times, boot up in under 30 seconds, never thought "this is going slow"... Except for object and NPC loading in WoW at times. I am looking at getting a 950 (5x faster read speed) or 951 (4x faster read speed) to solve this problem. I want to eliminate this loading of game objects crap once and for all. 

 

Anyone have experience with switching between the 2 in a huge game like this? Anyone without anecdotal evidence wanna share what would happen in theory?

Switching from an SSD to another SSD, really doesn't make a difference. As I have done from Samsung 840 -> 850 -> Intel 750

Doesn't make a difference. Much of the problem is that the data being pulled isn't large enough to make a difference or the requests the game makes to storage are frequent enough to kill performance.

Some games don't even show a difference in load times from hdd to ssd, let alnoe sata ssd vs nvme ssd. I wouldn't bother upgrading unless you have the money and just really want it. From everything that I have seen and read about the tech, it is marginally faster in everyday computing but only really noticeable if you have them side by side.

Save your pennies for the 960 Pro (due to release in the next week or so) if you are really going to go nuts. But I doubt object pop-in or loading or whatever is going to be fixed by these faster drives.

 

I've struggled to find a decent real world performance benchmark. I run a lot of Lightroom and Photoshop. Tons of batch processing. I want to know how much of a difference to expect from ONE fricking drive that costs $350.

Some things in large games just take a while to load, especially MMOs or other online games. Upgrading your SSD won't help that. I don't play WoW so I haven't tested it, but I don't think its going to fix your problem.

 

I moved GTA V between my HDD and 950 Pro in the hopes it would load Online faster. Its back on my HDD now, load times were basically unchanged (65GB on my 950 Pro to gain maybe 5 seconds of load time is not worth it!)

GTA5 takes like 2 hours to load and I don't understand why. It really bothers me.
