i3 6100 vs i5 6500

Ok Guys I screwed up I bought a i3 6100 from ncix (I did not open it) and I am looking into it and I really want a i5 6500 now for that quad core speed, the only thing is I am saving up money (cause I am in collage) and I need the cheapest gaming pc (for now) and I really don`t know what to do. Should I one return it to ncix and pay the shipping / restocking fee and get a i5 6500, Or should I keep it and don`t worry about the 50 fps increase i would get if i don`t get it. ? So in a nutshell should I return it and get a i5 or keep it and save up for a better graphics card ?

I don't see how you would get a 50fps increase in any game going with the i5 over the i3. The i3 isn't bad for gaming and is a great option if you're trying to game on a budget.

Whether ot not you should return it depends on pricing and whether or not that cost would affect the rest of your system.

Are you using this paired with a graphics card and if so which one? What resolution/settings and what games do you want to play?

A i5 6500 is not 50 fps faster

Ummmm...a i5 6600k bottlenecks a GTX 1070 even OC'ed to 4.5 and its been proven OVER and OVER

Virtually no FPS difference when paired with a budget card like that. keep the i3 till you upgrade the graphics card.

i3 6100 will be fine with a 950.

No. The only bottleneck that occurs is above around 80 or 90 fps at 1080p otherwise the opposite has been proven, over and over. Please stop spreading misinformation, thanks.

The i3 won't at all hold back the 950 and there would most likely be little to no difference in performance for gaming between it and the i5.

It depends on what game you're playing.

Bottlenecking is just another term for things not being perfectly balanced in any case.

Basically, there will always be a bottleneck and there's no avoiding it.

I would return it. In maybe a couple of years when you might want a small upgrade, you would only need to upgrade the GPU instead of both.

why are people still on this i5 is god CPU BS.

10% difference in GTA V when both are OCed and most of the time the i5 just catches up to the i7 when it is OCed to 4.5GHz, who says that you can get that OC? Also that is with maxwell Titan X, not Pascal, so this is basically a 1070. This graph is by digitalfoundry.
You might look at it and think oh that is nothing, well now think about the i7 giving you a more stable FPS, now think about that the i5 when running at 4.5GHz bearly gives the same FPS as a stock 6700k and what if you cannot get your i5 to that, now think about if your CPU goes up to 80-90% or over, then you might get some stuttering. Lastly think about the future
b41227d61898217535329a3fdc5d06ee.png
and then you have this video that shows that at 1080p locked 60 FPS the 6600k at 4.5GHZ has a really hard time with a 1060. We even see 99% in witcher 3 and if you think it will get better in the furture then you are a fool, it will only get worse, when "next gen" games start hitting us in 2-3 years, then that i5 is fucked harder than it already is. Games are getting more and more CPU demanding.

you should always aim at getting atleast a i5 for gaming, there is only so much a dual core with HT can do

Aiming for an i5 isn't necessarily worth it if it gouges at the budget for a graphics card or other important components.

unless you plan to keep the system for a long time and plan to get a GPU above 1050ti/470. It will bottleneck everything above that. You can just watch that video I linked a i5 has a hard time keeping up with a 1060 and even hits 99-100% in witcher 3
