But when do you know it's necesary?

When per exemple theres a new feature that your board could support, but wasnt implented at the launch of your motherboard, so then sometimes you will need to update bios to get access to these features / supports...

Besides of that, no need to update the bios..

Hi! Im running a Z97-A motherboard from ASUS. I went to there website to get the latest drivers. And i downloaded a couple of drivers from there website. everyone has an .exe file in them but the BIOS driver has a .cap file. I googled but did't find any good instructions. So im wondering if someone would help me with this by linking a good instruction or writing a quick one your selfs!

Thanks in advance!

I don't think you have to download the BIOS update seperately anymore. Last time i checked you could 1-click download and install it from the BIOS directly, at least on my Sabertooth. :D

...the BIOS driver has a .cap file.

If the .cap file was part of a .zip file, there should be a BIOS flash .exe in the zip with it.

If not, there should be a BIOS flash utility somewhere on the ASUS site. Usually, it's either on the same page or there should be a link to it on the same page as the BIOS file.
