You have always wanted to team with people about servers and learn about them...

This is the best place to do it. We will share stuff we know in a group. It is good for server beginners who are beginning with servers so they can get info if they do don know about that tip, hack, tip, or advice with servers.

so this is server stuff thread? cool. had my rPI as a webserver for a while but that didnt seem to like beeing on 24/7 so it broke and i cant bother fixing it now. might be getting a 1U 2x4 core thing with 16GB of ram pretty soon as my new webserver, NAS and all that good stuff

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Hey!, I own a youtube channel called ThinkFries. I will post a video later this year on how to make a file server on Windows 7 or higher, I am going to use windows 10 for the file server ( FTP ) but to make a file server. The minimum requirements for your server are Windows 7 or higher or Windows server 2011 essentials, Intel Core i3-5015U or Any Intel Xeon E5, 6GB DDR3 Memory, and a Intel HD Graphics 5500, AMD Radeon R9, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti, or NVIDIA Quadro M3000

cool, that might be usefull if i win the bid on the server, im probably going to run one or two VMs to split the processing power a bit because a NAS dosent need 8 cores lol

why would the servers in your  image need an optical drive for every eight drive bays?

Its old.  Nobody puts ODD into servers these days ...

A fair chunk of them don't even have disk ... although internal disk is making a come back big time.

The first rule of server club is there is no such thing as servers. Honestly forget about servers there is no difference between a “PC” and a server but for some reason they have this almost mystic quality.

Yes, the pictures look cool but if you boil it down there is very little difference. If I am being honest I way more prefer building custom PC’s than servers, they are way more user friendly and you can get almost every possible configuration into a desktop form factor.

I have servers at my home (and more than the other half knows about) in my basement and I never turn them on because they are so loud and use so much power. Yes, you can get cheap ones on eBay etc. but odds on they are at least 3 if not 5 years old (because they are classed as assets and from a financial perspective are kept by organisations for that long due to depreciation).

If you want to be a hardware engineer, then it is kind of pointless learning old hardware but if you want to learn about the server software side of things you can build a home lab that would be way easier I made a post about such things.

But in general a server is just a PC without anyone sat at the screen (if it has a screen).

The entire sub-forum is dedicated to what this thread is attempting. I believe it is just @OP trying to promote his youtube channel. I don't want to deter anyone from posting helpful replies to other posts, so just be active and replying - that's all the help that is needed ^_^
