i5 is the best option if you are a stickler for performance, the i3 to i5 jump is the biggest in terms of performance. now don't get me wrong, i3 6100 is still a great cpu, but it's more for budget builds under 500 and the i5 6600k is for around 800 to 900 dollar builds

My budget trying to stay around 900 but you guys know how things get...

thats not bad, i would get a 550W PSU isntead but otherwise thats solid

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Would you then put that money towards a higher I-5, and at that point go to a k?  That would also mean my mobo needs a z1070 chipset to overclock and is that extra money spent worth it?

i would try to get a Z170 motherboard and a 6600K but if you cant do that either more RAM or a bigger SSD will be really good choices

A few edits, still B/W theme. Find the cpu cooler and ram on Amazon.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($195.79 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler  ($34.99)
Motherboard: MSI Z170A SLI ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($89.98 @ Newegg)

^$89 Z170 board with black PCB instead of dark brown, supports more than 2133Mhz memory
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($85.00)

^Stick to 2x4gb if it's over budget
Storage: Crucial MX300 275GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($69.98 @ Newegg)

^You need at least 240gb for SSD these days, better price/GB you can fit more of your important games
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($49.99 @ Newegg)

^proper SATA 3 6gb/s drive, the hitachi you have is a SATA 2 with only 3GB/s speeds
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Dual Video Card  ($274.98 @ Newegg)

^I'd probably save here by going with a cheaper 1060 with backplate
Case: Phanteks ECLIPSE P400 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: EVGA 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($52.00 @ Newegg)

^Same PSU - It's discounted with rebates atm, stick with this.
Total: $912.70

Got rid of the fans and LED to improve on the important components. Case already has decent airflow with 2 included, add the LED strips later.
