shall i just get the gtx 760 or stick to my guns and get the asus r9 280x?

Anubikai

Im thinking of a new gpu and i play at 1080p only......im never going over pretty sure i wont want to....so i was wondering which one of these two shall i get. My budget is £240 so its in the middle of both of them, so:

save money and get:

GTX 760 - £203

or spend some more and get

AMD R9 280x - £260

I dont mind spending the extra money but will i see any difference? i had a msi 7950 before if that makes a difference...rest of specs are in my sig...

7950 to 760 is a lateral upgrade. Save for 280x or 290x.

For the life of me I can't figure out why people are even considering a 760, not a very value.

Why not just overclock that 7950 you already have? It's a no brainer to me, as those cards are legendary overclockers. It can match the performance of that 280x as it's literally a 7970 with a different name and shroud.

A 760 is a big NO-GO here, it's out of it's league here, since it's really a 660 (non ti) card a bit polished, and you can't compare a 660 to a 7970 od 7950, it's a landslide win for amd.

If you don't have the 7950 anymore get the 280x, if you still own the 7950 stick to it. It's more than competent @1080p for now. Upgrade when you need it. Not whenever a new card launches. You could easily play anything that comes out this and next year on at least high imho.

DO NOT BUY THE 760!

Dude a 280x litterally a 7970ghz card, don't spend extra money on a 280x its a waste, the msi 7970 easily matches it for performance, and high memory clock makes little to no difference at at all (2fps if your lucky), if you want the higher memory clocks you can easily overclock it on the MSI card,

I just bought a brand new 7950 for $220 to go with my other one. (main reason is I'm PCIE 2.0 capable not 3.0, plus their pretty cheeeeep)

My brother bought 2x dual fanned 7950's for $430

Bargain performance to be had.

I have searched and seen dual fanned 7970's for $260-300 on average, one as low as $220

Finding 7950/7970's on specials are getting harder as stock reduces...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I agree the 280X would be the better card to go with between the two even though I like my 760s, but saying the 760 is just a non ti polished 660 is a bit meh, especially since it uses a different chip.  My MSI 760s overclock to 770 levels without too much fuss and are lightening fast in SLI.  Granted he is just talking about buying one card, but the 760 still has value since finding 7950's at discounted prices are getting very hard to find.

Lets get one thing straight, the 760 is based on a 660, not a 660ti, and the 770 is based on the 680, so how do you think a 660 can be overclocked to match a 680?
