Which video card

GamerJ

I'm currently working on a build and I want to play games (Dragon Age, Witcher, etc) at high settings at 1080p (will upgrade to 1440p later) and I'm trying to decide on which gtx 1080 video card to get as I plan on keeping it for 1.5 - 2 years before upgrading. I've pretty much narrowed it down to either the zotac amp extreme,or the evga ftw and was hoping someone with experience with either the cards or the companies would enlighten me on which would be the better option, or if there's a better option I'm missing.

Dont buy a 1080 for 1080p, way overkill. That should last upwards of 5 years at that resolution, dont buy it to upgrade after 2 years. A 1060 would be better suited for this.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

If you are getting a gtx 1080 go for a 1440p at least, if not a gtx 1060 is a way cheaper option, or a 1070 if you want 144Hz.

A GTX 1080 is absolute overkill for 1080p, especially if you plan on upgrading in 2 years.

Ah. So the 1080 was overkill for just 1080p. So if I was to upgrade to a 1440p monitor, how long do you think this card would last me before I need to upgrade?

Yeah, I realize my mistake now. I still want the beefier video card (I'm just that vain I guess), but I will upgrade to 1440p. Just wandering which of the gtx cards would be best. Also, about how long do you think the 1080 would last me before needing an upgrade?

id go with a 1070 or 1060.

,Yeah, that's what I've heard would be a better option. I'm still sticking with the 1080, but will upgrade to 1440p. Just want to know which gtx card or company to go with.

gtx 1070 or 1080 would be ideal when you know you won't be upgrading for several years. A 1060 would work, but you won't be at maxed settings and likely only 60fps.

A 1070 will be able to get you higher averages so if you have a good monitor you can have those higher refresh rates if you want them.

A 1080 is a bit overkill, but if you want the ability to upgrade to 1440 when monitor prices drop next year, it would be a realistic option.

Yeah I do plan to upgrade to 1440p monitor, so I'll be sticking with the 1080. Would you recommend any particular video card?

Honestly, most cards perform extremely similar overall. The major factors are cooling and efficiency. Personally I prefer EVGA as their customer service is very helpful.

I tell most that it depends more on your preferences for the aesthetics then anything.

Yeah the aesthetics isn't really a priority for me. Performance, cooling, and customer service would be the three things I'm focusing on.

For now, run it as is. So performance and cooling are priority, but customer service is also a priority for me (don't really care about aesthetics)
