I want to buy a new shiny monitor. It's supposed to be over 24" and have a resolution of 1440p. Now the question has come up; should I get an ultrawide monitor or a normal 16:9 one but with 144hz. Here are my "final" picks, but I'm open to suggestions.

LG 34UM94C;

Asus MG279Q;

http://bit.ly/2dC11d3 (available cheaper on a different site)

I will be running them with a gtx 760 but I plan to upgrade to a 1070 soon.

I would pick the ultrawide

The extra screen space can prove beneficial if you need screen space, which can be helpful for content creation, programming, designing, and even general web browsing, as you get over 30% more pixels. If this appeals to you, get ultrawide.

A GTX 1070 can take advantage of the higher refresh rate in games like CS: GO, Unreal Tournament, TF2, etc. However, it only supports FreeSync, not G-Sync, so no adaptive VSync for your NVIDIA card.

I would personally go for an Ultrawide, but that is also just because of the way I use my PC.

It's all just kinda personal, do you want to do competitive games stuff? Have an 'immersive' experience in a game? Do you multitask a lot? Are you gonna do stuff that requires an IPS screen over a TN screen?

Choosing a monitor is a lot about trade offs.

This comparison is a lot about "everything the ultrawide has (like IPS technlogoy, extra resolution, wider aspect ratio and more) vs. 144Hz."

I love the ultrawide for the extra space, but the difference between 60 and 144hz is supposed to be immense. That's why I'm struggling with it. I do love my csgo

It won't necessarily make or break your CS: GO gameplay as much as something like 30 FPS vs 60 FPS, but it is undoubtedly an asset if you want the lowest response time possible, and the smoothness is hard to compare, even outside of gaming, like when just scrolling web pages.

I prefer the ultra wide both for desktop usage and gaming.  So much more immersive to render at that aspect ratio.  That being said, if you're big into competitive games like CSGO and such then the extra refresh rate is probably more important to you.  I'm not at all into those types of games.

Thrive on change. Embrace volatility.
