I'm going to buy an SSD soon and going through all the options, I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the choices and can't decide which SSD to get. I'm looking for something in the 240GB-300GB range that can last me a while. Should I just go with the cheapest drive or should I step it up to the upper range? I already have HDD storage so no need to buy a large SSD.

Probably the best you can buy is a samsung 850 evo

I'd stay away from patriot. Had a couple of their drives die on me after little use.

IMO probably not. 2.5" SSDs are limited in bandwidth/speed by the actual SATA interface. Just don't get used lol

Bought a Kingston HyperX Savage SSD, 240 gb @ 70 euro. Very happy with this thing, and it contained everything I could ever use. (2,5" to 3,5" converter plate, piece of foam to increase the thickness of the drive from 7 mm to 9.X mm, 2x4 screws, very nice HyperX pen screwdriver, SATA cable, external casing with USB 3.X...) I think this drive is at the upper range, but it still was cheap. (considering SDD prices in the netherlands) I would go for an established brand.

My recommendations would be:

Samsung 850 EVO

Crucial MX200/MX300

SanDisk Z400/SSD PLUS

A-Data SP550

All of these contain a good controller for the average gamer with a good price and extra NAND for write endurance.

What is wrong with used?

Just because there is theoretical limit of SATA 3 is 6Gb ( 750MB/s) does not mean that there are SSDs that fast. You are making it sound like every is in the high 600MB/s of low 700MB/s, my 850evo (that SSD everyone always talks about since it is good) is about 450MB/s.

To the OP

Get a SK Hynix SL308, Crucial MX300 or Samsung 850 evo

The Kingston UV400 and ADATA SP550 are also good

Most SSD's go slower than the SATA bus allows. Remember to take benchmarks with a grain of skepticism.

Go with either a Samsung Evo drive or Crucial MX series. Or a Samsung Pro drive if you can justify the extra cost.

Make sure to get the MX series from Crucial though; they make lower end BX series drives as well.

Check for errors and check if it is authentic then DBAN, it is easy as that.

Saying that an SSD is faster than a HDD so it is bottlenecked by the interface is garbage.

Um no that's not what I'm saying. I don't know if you can read my "garbage" but I clearly stated that SSDs are limited in speed by SATA. Whether or not they reach said speed is a different point. HOWEVER, and not because, they are still faster than HDDs

*SSDs CAN be limited by SATA 3.

That said, name a SATA SSD that reaches 650MB/s without using a RAM disk for caching.

Hi there :)

could you specify a bit on the things you will be doing on the SSD. If it's for everyday usage and light workloads pretty much any SSD should do the job and you won't be noticing performance differences from 5MB/s - 10MB/s more or less on one SSD or another. I'd simply check reviews and feedback from specific brand and models and see which ones appear to be reliable. Also a good thing to look out for is the TBW rating on a SSD as this shows you how much data you can write before the SSD goes in a read-only mode.

One suggestion from me would be WD Blue SSD as it has great performance and up to 400TB TBW rating.

Let me know if you have any questions!
