the most effective one is probably something along the lines of norton or similarly high budget solutions.

(whatever you're gonna yammer

about to me, norton has improved leaps and bounds since 2013, please chill your ass)

Windows Defender

is an absolute disaster... literally it's own advantage is that its built into windows.

I know

Norton

Kaspersky

Bitdefender comes in mind

note OP's question: "most effective"

for all the world's yammering about norton's false positives, it is a frikkin fortress, and as of yet the only antivirus that has proven to me to efficiently protect against stupidity.

(you know those people yammering about uninstalling norton? i dont have issues with it, because i understand uninstalling a vital piece of security shouldnt be as easy as clicking next.)

I use and like Kapersky, and I have also heard amazing things about Bitdefender.

I got my version of Kapersky of a daily deal from Newegg for only like $10, so keep your eyes peeled for a sweet deal like that. I've seen them have deals on Bitdefender as well.

Eset has very good stuff. It cost a bit, but is really worth it. Also light to run and has been awarded several times for their excellent software. I myself have been using it for years no after several others (even paid ones) let me down including some of the more known brands. Recommend the smart security. version.

The only Anti-virus i would avoid is McAfee, *shudders*

Triggered. The forum software is now causing its' host servers to slow to a crawl as your "McAfee" text gets scanned for malware. If not cleansed, the servers will spin themselves into a whirlwind of fire and burn down the datacentre. OK, maybe not. But seriously, please don't use McAfee @Young_Warrior.

ESET and Kaspersky are the only 2 Security software Suites I'd ever considering installing on my PC's these days, and even then, I'd only recommend them for those of us less tech savvy or those of us who download way too much crap without thinking about it. Personally, I've used MalwareBytes and Windows Pretender for 3 years, and never had a problem. And I fall into the category of downloading way too much crap.
