They should be used more. They can be very good depending on the Xeon. For example, the E3 lineup can be used as a cheaper alternative to an i7 whilst being better than i7 in terms of power consumption and heat produced.

This is my build below which seems to be good for my needs if your interested: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/RKTH3F

I believe that any i5 4th - 6th gen is more than enough when paired with a decent GPU, so an i5 6500 or i5 6600 should meet your needs very well.  As for future-proofing (I don't know much about future-proofing) I believe 5th or 6th gen i7 or any Zeon e5 would be more than enough to last you for gaming and programming for many years to come.

My Specs

  • Current Machine 2021 - 20XX
    • CPU: Intel i9 11900KF 3.5 GHz 8 Core 16 Thread
    • Cooler: NZXT Kraken Z73 RGB AIO
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z590 VISION G
    • RAM: G.Skill Trident Z Neo (Black/White) 128GB (4x32GB) DDR4 @3600 MHz CL18
    • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 12 GB Vision OC
    • SSD: 2x 2TB Intel 660p NVMe SSDs & 1x Samsung 860 QVO 2.5 SSD
    • HDD: 2x WD Black 4TB HDDs & 2x Segate 2TB HDDs
    • PSU: SeaSonic PRIME 1300 W 80+ Platinum
    • OS: Windows 10 Pro

  • Retired Machine 2017 - 2021: Lenovo S20 Thinkstation
    • CPU: Intel Xeon X5690 3.46Ghz
    • Motherboard: OEM Lenovo S20 Z79 MBO
    • RAM: 48GB (6x8GB) UDIMM DDR3
    • GPU: MSI Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti 11GB
    • SSD: Samsung 860 QVO 1TB
    • HDD: 2x Segate 7200rpm 2TB

An e5 2660 v2 is a 10-core CPU. You do not need a 10-core CPU for gaming, and the low frequency might bite you on some games.

What prices are you getting these Xeon processors? Their MSRPs are about $1400, which is insanely overkill for whatever you're doing, so I'm assuming you're buying them secondhand/used, which is where you want to be looking if you can't afford newer things.

I don't have a huge amount of experience with Xeons, however, I believe there isn't too huge of a difference from this comparison here:

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-X5670-vs-Intel-Xeon-X5660

I believe they perform very similar and either choice will serve well

yes they are second hand an x5660 and x5670 would cost me around 350$

hp z800 rig with 16 gigs of ram.while an e5 would cost me a wooping around 700$ with 16gigs ram hp z420

xeon x5675 vs xeon e5 2620 vs core i5 6500 which will serve me better for robotics, coding and networking and gaming, also should i worry about getting  ddr4 memor since xeon is ddr3 and how much is this futurre proof since ddr5 will come in 2020.

DDR3 is not dead yet. Many people still use DDR3 in there system rigs, in America, we have not all switched over to DDR4 because its expensive memory.  I see DDR3 going on for like 5-20 more years before it finally dies out. Many commercially available PCs in the U.S. still use DDR3 and you only see DDR4 in the newest baddest rigs, for gaming at 4k and doing VR stuff. If your looking for 1080p and recording at that DDR3 should be just fine. As for your processor I can't say I don't know that much about Xeons.
