They're both fine for for a 24/7 system. The Red is better built and quieter but is usually more expensive. If those aren't important to you, go for the cheaper drive.

I thought that WD Reds were meant for RAID...

They'll still work just fine out of raid/in a desktop. They're just designed for 24/7 use and have support for features you want if you're doing RAID (like TLER and better vibration tolerance).

Oh okay, so like a WD Blue/Black wouldn't work for RAID well then?

That's my understanding

They'll work in RAID, but they don't support TLER -- which basically stops a RAID array from shitting itself if it hits a bad sector.

Blue < Black < Red < Gold

If you can afford it, the red is good, but obviously it will be more expensive than the WD blue.

Just remember that black will perform better than red, as it generally has a higher rpm and more cache. I can never recommend a blue or a green, as they ar really not that great.

Blacks barely perform better than red, and they are much louder and have lower lifespan.

If someone can afford a black, I would always recommend they buy a red instead.

Black's are barely better than Blues.

They're for different use cases.

Reds should be used for server environments while blues in desktops (and blacks are just overpriced and should never be recommended).

No. They are hard drives with different specs.

Any colour can be used in any place with 0 issues.

The main difference is increasing speed and lifespan with increasing price.

You can put an enterprise HDD in your PC or a WD blue in a datacenter. Both will work like regular hard drives.

BTW reds are "for nas" not server environments. There is no reason why you cannot put a red in a PC.

You're right, except that it doesn't make sense due to costs.

Sometimes people want more performance and durability than a blue drive.

So instead of buying a black, a red is better.

Now that WD just released the gold drives, I will be recommending those to rich people, because they are even better than reds.

It all depends on your budget.
