Questions about USB Live Linux

Go to solution Solved by r00tH4cK3r,

No its a live environment meaning when you shutdown or reboot it goes back to stock. You can't save to it unless you install it.

So if I make a Live linux USB thing will I be able to save to it? (Ie if I make a document or something will the document save to it?) The idea is my Macbook pro hates having Kali installed (Doesn't let me use Ethernet or wireless), but Live Linux works just fine. That and if I happen to do anything really bad I can just throw the card away

Sure, it's called making a persistent usb drive. A quick google shows this guide http://docs.kali.org/downloading/kali-linux-live-usb-persistence

Kali

i encountered one of my old status updates today, joking about how all people asking help with linux are talking about kali, once again... :P

on topic tho, there's two ways to run linux off of a USB drive:

- one is running a "live" distro, like running off the ISO file, in some cases saving data is possible but it's always a bit of a questionmark for as far as i know

- the other is "installing" the distro to the usb drive, bootloader and all. although in theory this method is not different from installing to hard drive.

You can install linux onto a usb and just run it off the usb drive if you want.

First of all I don't need to. I have run Linux for years and have dealt with the OS a lot. Under normal circumstances you cannot save files to a live Linux environment. If you found a way to do it, great, but don't attack me because you disagree. Its called a forum for a reason

The question was can you save to a LIVE environment and I answered that

off the top of my head, it's kinda distro-dependant, that said kali is based on the debian tree, which seems to be the most supported one for things like this, so i doubt it'll be very hard. (chances are even stuff like LiLi usb creator wont have any issues doing the setup even.)

Indeed, you could also use 2 usb sticks if you have them. One for the installer files, then simply select the other stick as the install location. Note though that windows will no longer be able to detect everything past the first partition on the stick as it doesn't support partitioned usb sticks for some reason.

unetbootin can create a ubuntu live USB that has president storage. I have never tried this.

I have used tailOS before and that does save data so it is possible.
