I have a pc thats never being used so i thought i might fold with it, i didnt know if its worth folding or if it would work.

spec:

win vista 64bit

2gb 667mhz ddr2(dual channel)

intel core 2 duo 8600 2.4ghz(also has some intel viiv stuff i have no idea what that is)

nvidia gt610(old gpu x1300 pro blew a capacitor)

random foxconn mobo

coolermaster cosmos 2(ok thats a joke, its in a inwin z637( its pathetic))

nvm, i just turned it on, it been running for around 30 minutes and thick smoke is coming out of it, i think the psu is dying, dat smell.

yep psu has died, must have got really hot, the fan has even started melting

Yes it can fold. Just leave it on 24/7 and it will be equivalent to an expensive PC running it for about X hours. 

 

Edit: Your PSU died. No folding I guess LOL. I think that there might have too much dust in your PC

it was made around 6-7 years ago and wasnt ever opened apart from the gpu change which was done by my father.

Must have been an interesting experience. But yeah, any machine that CAN fold would be beneficial to folding, even if it doesn't net very much PPD. If you can afford it, why not?

 

I still have a P4 rig folding for me during off-peak hours if that's an indication of anything.

I disagree. If it's an older machice I don't think the energy wasted on folding, even if you can afford it, is being put to a good use. If it's like under 3k ppd then I would say don't bother.
