Modern Racing Games?

TheBestUserName

The Crew's performance on my 980ti / 6700k is garbage and mystifying, so I've given up on it.  I looked at Assetto Corsa and.. meh.

I'm hoping for something with eye-candy graphics and solid game play.  I don't think I have a preference between simulators/arcade/open world.

I'm also hoping to not spend full price, $60, on it... unless it's something truly special.

What are racers playing these days that's really good?

forza horizon 3, forza apex

grid 1, 2, autosport

need for speed 2015

project cars

burnout paradise

flatout 1, 2, ultimate carnage

need for speed most wanted 2012

FUEL

test drive unlimited 2

*i've played all of these. i give dibs to forza horizon 3 and forza apex. the latter is free but you have to pay $60 for the former. if you don't mind the performance issues and UWP, FH3 is a very, very good open-world racer. the best i've played in a long time

edit

oops, forgot to mention Dirt 1, 2, 3, Dirt Showdown (didn't the play the last one), and Dirt Rally (beware! very difficult with a controller!)

Automobilista (based on rfactor engine)

rFactor 1/2 ( tons of mods that are easy to install)

That's weird. Runs fine on my 980Ti 5820K combo. 1440p 60+fps on max settings easily.

Here's my list:

  1. DiRT Rally
  2. Project cars
  3. F1 2016
  4. The Crew
  5. iRacing

* I have Logitech racing wheel, can't comment on playing with controller.

* Haven't had the time for Forza yet.

It is Codemasters publisher weekend on Steam, there are many good racing titles on sale. DiRT Rally is half price and that is by far the most immersive racing game I have ever played, it does take time to learn but each car handles differently and when you improve, you feel a sense of reward.

Grid 2 is another good racing game from Codemasters if you enjoy the arcade genre of racing, you would easily achieve over a hundred frames per second with your rig.

Very cool.  I watched a couple Dirt Rally videos on YouTube.  The graphics are pretty impressive.  I might end up getting that before the day's over. I don't have a wheel, though. I have a 360 controller. Some one's comment about Dirt Rally's difficulty without a wheel is a little off-putting.

I also installed that anniversary update so I could try out Forza Apex.  I just started that download.  I don't know what the difference is between that one and Horizon 3, but I imagine I'll soon find out.  The scale that the marketing pages give to the size of Horizon 3 is very tempting.  But.. ugh.. $60.  Too bad it's only in the Windows store. We don't have any past history (I don't think) to gauge or predict if/when the price will drop.

yeah, dirt rally looks nice, and is very optimized.

i'm not kidding that the game will not be fun with a controller. driving a slow beater like the mini won't be that bad, but it is extremely difficult in anything faster, even with all aids turned on

forza apex is basically like forza 6, but isn't. it has quite a few cars and tracks, but it's not as feature-rich as forza 6

forza horizon 3 performs wildly different from forza apex, so you can't actually gauge how well your system will run FH3 based on forza apex. an sadly i don't think FH3 will see a price drop anytime soon. the xbone version might though, but it has to be the digital copy so you can play it on PC

I really enjoy Project Cars.

Apart from that, there are some solid sales on racing games on steam right now. Particularly the F1 series.
