I got 8GB for a Mac mini for £38 years back, same model sticks from eBuyer as Apple wanted £360 for. It's like trying to upgrade a Dell, they often don't support memory configurations they would never sell the machines with. Why allow a user to upgrade to 16GB when you can cap it at 8 and tell them to buy a new machine if they need more memory.

it is the same.... but the mac branded stuff is validated to work as the machine will reject stuff that is too high of a density or too high of a frequency. I put 8GB in a mac mini just had to pay attention to the frequency as higher stuff isn't garenteed to work too well since there isn't a BIOS to change ram settings. Also the location of the notch on the ram so it fits

Yes and no...

You can install non-Apple certified parts into the MacBook Pro...but whether the computer detects it properly, and making it work properly, is another thing.

There is a Apple diagnostics tool built-in (?), and it will scan for new hardware / changes. It will give you a warning / error it isn't Apple certified.

One of the certified Apple Mac techs that I work with just replaced a person's (university student) MacBook Pro with a replacement third-party battery (student brought it in himself). Battery installs, and holds a charge, but the Apple diagnostics tool freaks out. We only charged the battery up to 55%...so the student will have to find out if the computer will let the battery charge up to 100%.
