Need HDD - really silent contraption

MonteToast

Hey guys,

i´m running out of space and i want to get some mass storage for some backups and and more games.

Currently i´m using 2 Samsung Evo 250gig in Raid0 in a H440. (Dont need to mount the new HDD)

I´m a student so my budget is quite limited :/

I really want to have it silent, that´s why i`m struggling to get an HDD. So i ask you people, which HDD would you consider the most silent drive. Also i want to know if there are some weird contraptions or mods which make it inaudible.

If you have any suggestions or pictures or something please let me know.

thanks peps

WD Reds are one of the quietest hdds available it's the reason I use them.

You can suspend your hdd's to reduce vibration with elastics or foam molds. I suspend my own drives in open-cell foam molds.

Here's an older one in some different cases:

It should be fairly easy to do it in a H440 due to the basement and movable drive sleds.

This looks weird :D

how much is the noise reduction, from your hearing.

Vibration resonating with the case is usually most of the noise from a hdd. I can barely hear my drives when I try to get the room as quiet as possible and I'll probably never go back to hard mounting a hdd if I can help it.

But does the cost of it really justify its silence?

To each their own.

I care immensely about the acoustics of my system.

It didn't cost me that much anyway. Reds aren't that much more expensive and I had ~1000 open cell foam bricks lying around from packaging.

I'm not sure if that would help much. When it comes to absorbing sound, foam isn't much better than any other dense material and you'd need a pretty thick layer for it to do anything noticeable.
