GTX 780 TI - My Thoughts

Akula

Nvidia has announced the GTX 780 TI.

Initial thoughts, to combat the 290x threat.

Nvidia claim it to be their fastest graphics card yet, which leads me to think it's set to be faster than a Titan.

Few scenario's.

Scenario #1 - GTX Titan becomes EOL & GTX 780 TI takes it's place as Nvidia's top tier card.

  • Fully enabled GK110 Cores (2880)
  • 6GB VRAM
  • Minus GPUGU Computing
  • Aftermarket Cooling license

This scenario would crown the GTX 780 TI without even knowing the 290X performance figures, a fully enabled GK110 is a pipe dream currently, but Nvidia claim the GTX 780 TI is their most powerful card to date, this should be seen as a valid option.

Some may ask why sell a Quadro for $999? The current $3000+ pricepoint of the Tesla/Quadro isn't only about the full enabled GK110 chip, but the drivers & support along side.

Scenario #2 - Gimped GTX Titan

  • GK110 Cores (2688)
  • 3GB VRAM
  • Original GTX 780 Pricepoint
  • Aftermarket Cooling license
  • GTX 780 pricedrop & GTX 780 TI takes it's initial pricepoint

Most see this as a realistic option, the performance differences between the current lineup GTX 780/Titan is 10-15% - Nvidia would be bold to attempt to fit a new card between them.

they charge £800 for a titan so they will charge £1000 for the titan ti (which is only 7% more powerful), that way the "must haves" will get the titan ti but more people will think the titan is a good deal now (just because theres something with less bang/buck above it) and the 780 will get WAY more sales than originally.

its all part of nvidias brainwashing/marketing tactics.

There's no Titan Ti. Marketing and brainwashing is two different things, and NVIDIA definitely isn't brainwashing anyone.

IMO, I don't believe that this would be a gimpted Titan. At least I hope not considering that the 290X is running on equal footing to the Titan. At least on the benchmarks we have seen so far. What I hope happens is that Nvidia becomes a bit more competitive on their prices. AMD's 290 and 290X are sitting on a very sweet price to performance spot. I hope Nvidia can respond to that.

Nvidia just tricked everyone with g-sync and the physx nonsense along with the streaming bs.

I like the card actually, even tough I know nothing about it. It will be better than the 780, but probably won't go higher than Titan, what I'd like to see is Titan's 2688 cores without the double point precision and less VRAM, maybe 4GB? But please god no 256bit...

  • 3 weeks later...

What do you all think of the score of 33894 on 3D Mark Advantage that Tom Logan got from a stock cooler on a stock GTX 780 ti overclocked?

I think it doesn't mean anything because synthetic benchmarks prove nothing. People who fork out $700 for a higher benchmark number need help, or they need to donate their abundant money to hungry children somewhere.

Nvidia just tricked everyone with g-sync and the physx nonsense along with the streaming bs.

If I may ask, what makes you think it is nonsense? PHYSX adds tons of visually pleasing effects and if G-SYNC takes off, it will revolutionize gaming.

Except just like 3D g-sync is going to be something that hardly takes off considering you need to buy a different monitor to make it work.

If Nvidia were to make a product that didnt require some special secondary hardware to work perhaps it might take off.

for instance mantel. .all you need is the game and the card and wala it works.. not a 450-700$ monitor aswell.

Well my #1 Scenario was rather close to the mark, the 6GB VRAM is still viable down the track.

I nailed the rest :D
