so....i dont know if anyone here has a raspberry pi 2 or 3, but in theory, would it be able to take some laptop speakers, strip an old headphone audio jack, solder the wires together, would it be able to work? laptop speakers, connected to audio jack?

well... the 3.5mm jack is for display output but sure, that could work if you have a decent amp or something between the plug and speakers because that headphone jack will not be enough to run much more then a pair of headphones

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

but do laptop speakers even take much power at all?why would an audio 3.5 jack be display output? isnt that hdmi or mini hdmi or vga and the others?

its not a headphone jack, its a 4 or 5 pole 3.5mm jack, it has chanels for data and its an actiual way to get a display signal tho rarely used and on almost NOTHING, its what the inline contoles on headphones for your phone use basically only its passing a display signal instead. you are suposed to use an adapter to make it into a usefull standard tho and i have only seen one of those ever but i have also not lookd, anyway laptop speakers are more powerfull then you think, and its a really week jack probably, probably worse then your phone in terms of the power it can put out

The actual wiring will work fine, but you will probably want more amplifier than the Pi's got. You could always try it, I guess, but considering you can get a Shenzen-special PAM8403 stereo audio amp board with a volume control pot for $1 on eBay, like... Why not?

The TRRS connector is wired thusly:

That's slightly nonstandard but if you're not using the composite video output, then it doesn't matter.

If you want to skip the jack, the same conductors are available as solder pads on the bottom of the Pi. https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=89522 has a list of the assignments; audio_l and audio_r are PP25 and PP26, and you can use any of the ground testpoints.

This is definitely the way to go, I used this amp board in a mini mame cabinet with a pair of 3.5" speakers and it actually sounds pretty good.
