Don't get me wrong, still love the little guy, and trucks right along in D3/WoW/Telltale stuff just fine on lowest somewhere around the 30's-sometimes even 60, amazingly. Of course it tanks to single digit frequently when action says so. Nothing can last forever, and I think it might be time to upgrade to something a bit more modern. Putting an SSD in it sure spunked it up, but as time goes by even that can only do so much, really. I got it for free basically a couple years back, so it owes me nothing, and deserves to be pampered and lightly used.

I'm in the market either this fall/holiday season for a replacement that comes in ~$1000CAD new or possibly even lightly used. The later is definitely harder to rectify and quantify. I'd rather it was under the 15" mark, but that seems to be a point of contention on what is available without going well over my budget for respectable hardware.

One so far that has caught my attention is the ASUS ROG GL551VW-DS51. I'm open to suggestions though.

Here's how to update/fix/replace Alienware: Stay the fuck away from cheap quality products like Alienware

Do you need a laptop or desktop? Does it matter?

With how the canadian rupee is trading and trading at a lesser value for that matter :( at boxing day, you might be able to get a windows xp laptop. But all joking aside, maybe an hp omen is a good choice. you could get a 960m and a pretty sick exterior for around 1000 cad

It was given to me(would never willfully buy Alienware), and may actually go back to it's previous owner should he want, unlikely though. I have a main rig(in profile) so this is more a travel buddy for downtime with the in-laws, photo editing on the road, short gaming sessions at lunch breaks, etc. Hence the smaller the better.

Please don't succumb to the mindless elitists who hate a brand cause "it's cool" - Alienware machines are very solid compared to the rest of the products on the market. Feel free to ask @ShadowCaptain

It's more powerful than the GT 335M though, it would still be an upgrade.

Intel HD 530 would be a bigger upgrade ;)

Alienwares may be gaudy but they are solid machines.

If you can spare just a bit more you can get the DS71 which has the Core i7-6700HQ and the 960M 4GB instead of the 960M 2GB on the DS51.

Both have heat issues due to a thermal lock in the BIOS

I can't honestly say to much for or against the durability or lack there of with this machine, it has been very well taken care of in it's life, and has probably less then 2000 hours total usage. For a 6 year old notebook, it has done pretty well for itself admittedly. I just can't justify the price of one from my own pocket new. Atleast not for the usage needs I will incur upon it.

Some nice suggestions so far everyone, thank you, keep em coming!
