is a gtx 660 going to lose performance in a x8 slot opposed to a x16 slot?

Kevin11

Alright so I'm using a sabertooth z170 s motherboard and the build just looks way better having the graphics card in the second slot. But I am confused because it says that the motherboard has 3x 3.0 16x pci-e slots, and the bottom two run in 8x only when they are doing SLI so why am I getting x8 from the second slot with a single GTX 660 and will this make a noticeable difference in the performance of a 660? Can I still overclock just as much?

No, it is not going to lose any performance. Even PCI-e 2.0 8x slot which is basicaly PCI-e 3.0 4x will still be way more bandwidth than you will ever need for that GPU.

Figured so, thanks ^^ so am I still safe to overclock at the same speeds as before?

How about a Titan XP?

8x PCI-e 3.0 is still enough for even Titan XP. 4x may push it but then... NVIDIA cards doesent work on 4x.

NVIDIA cards do work on PCIe x4. It's SLI where that limitation comes into play.

I can tell you this because I had my 660 Ti in a PCIe 2.0 x4 slot as a folding@home card.

Thanks. I though that applies for single cards as well.
