no cause it needs to have the same amount of vram so a 4gb and a 8gb dont go 

 

But say you had the asus Strix RX 480 And a gigabyte rx 480 8gb editions it would work but run at the lower speed of the 2

So basically, Nvidia cards have to be by the same manufacturer, have the same amount of vram, etc, while amd doesnt care about manufacturer or amount of vram as long as they are of the same series, and the rx 480 and rx 460 are of the rx 400 series of cards, so am i correct or not?

This wont answer the Yes or No.

But there are examples of days gone past where you could on AMD.

R9 Series

290 and 390

290x and 390x

 

Even though you can, its not recommended but you can also do. 290 + 390x and vise versa mix matchs on these cards.

 

The 200 and 300 series AMD cards are popular for it on these two series, due to a simple bios update and tweaked clockspeeds makes one into another,...but they match.

 

You cannot Xfire a 280x with a 260x, but you can put a 280x with a 380x (If AMD bring out a 480x, it is NOT compatible though)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

no its the same for both 

 

they just have to have the same stuff inside them 

e.g stream processors , kuda cores & vram if one is diffrent they wont work

you can totally CFX a R9 290 with a R9 290X - they have diff count of Shader Units: 2560 vs 2816

but the 290X will work as a R9 290

the prerequisite for CFX is that they use the same core

that is highly incorrect

 

you can SLI cards from different manufacturers as long as they have same GPU - there's also a vBIOS compatibility issue

 

you cannot CFX a RX460 with a RX480 because they are not on the same core, RX460 is on Polaris 11 while RX480 is on Polaris 10

you can, theoretically, CFX a RX470 and a RX480 because both are on Polaris 10

Not quite. It's all about the GPU (in this case I mean the actual GPU part of the graphics card, not just using it as another word for "graphics card").

 

NVIDIA and AMD only make a few GPUs in each generation, and each one gets used in several different graphics cards. The GTX 1080 is made from the GP104 GPU, which has 2560 Pascal cores. The GTX 1070 uses the same GPU with the same 2560 cores, but 1/4 of them are disabled, so it only has 1920 functional cores. The GTX 1060 uses a smaller GPU, called GP106, which only has 1280 cores in its fully enabled state.

 

Both AMD and NVIDIA require that all graphics cards in SLI / CrossFire use the same GPU. In addition, NVIDIA requires that all GPUs have the same configuration, so you can't use the GTX 1080 and 1070 in SLI even though they both use the GP104 GPU, because they use different configurations of GP104.

 

However, AMD doesn't have the same restriction. As long as they use the same GPU they can be used in CrossFire, even if they have different configurations of that GPU.

 

The RX 480 uses a fully enabled Polaris 10 GPU, with 2304 cores. The RX 470 uses a partially disabled Polaris 10 GPU with 2048 active cores. The 480 and 470 are compatible in CrossFire.

 

The RX 460 uses a different GPU called Polaris 11, which has 1024 cores (although the 460 uses a partially disabled configuration so it only has 896 active cores). Either way, it is not compatible in CrossFire with the 470 or 480, because they use Polaris 10 GPUs.

As of sometime in 2013/2014, nVidia made the changes in their driver software, where the VRAM on the GPUs you were going to run in SLI with, MUST have the same VRAM. AMD is much more flexible, and it has been this way since supposedly the HD 2000 series (?) -- I personally know mixed Crossfire has been a thing since the Radeon HD 3000 series.

  1. As long as the GPU 'Core' / architecture is the same, you can run those cards in Crossfire
  2. VRAM amount does not need to be the same. It will run in Crossfire, using the lower amount available
  3. GPU Core and Memory frequencies DO NOT need to be the same -- even software like Sapphire TriXX allows you to run your Crossfired cards asynchronously

 

A prime example is the HD 7990, 7970 (all variants), 7950 (all variants), 7870 XT (limited runs), R9-280X, and R9-280.

 

All these cards use the 'Tahiti XT' *or the revised Tahiti XT2* GPU core. The 7990, 7970, R9-280X use the full chip, while the HD 7950, 7870 XT, and R9-280 used a cut down version (missing Stream Processors, Shaders, etc). You can run a mix of them in Crossfire -- and AMD clearly outlines that in their Crossfire Comparability chart.

As I said about, VRAM does not need to be identical for AMD Crossfire to work. You could run a 4GB R9-390X + 8GB R9-390X Crossfire.

The only drawback is it will become 4GB R9-390X + 4GB R9-390X Crossfire. The extra 4GB on the other card will not be used.

 

Before I upgraded to my two R9-Fury's, I had two different versions of the HD 7970.

  • Sapphire Dual-X HD 7970 running on the original 'Tahiti XT' core
  • Sapphire Vapor-X HD 7970 "GHz Edition" running on the revised 'Tahiti XT2"

I ran those in Crossfire without any problems -- and they worked together for ~2 years, up until I got rid of them.

If you look at my signature, my Intel system has a Sapphire Vapor-X HD 7950. I ran a 7970 + 7950 mixed Crossfire for a short amount of time

AMD Crossfire do not require the video cards to be from the same manufacturer.

You can go XFX RX-480 + Sapphire RX-480 Crossfire if you wanted.

(At one point in time I ran Sapphire HD 5850 + XFX HD 5850 +  (different model) Sapphire HD 5850 in 3-way Crossfire. Nothing wrong.)
