Z170 vs x99

Go to solution Solved by cc143,

If you can afford X99, go with that instead. LTT did a video back when the 6700k was first launched and there was $100 difference, now its obviously more, but it should get narrower as in 1-2 months since the new intel cpus were just released.

Also, the SSD comment above is very important, people don't understand what sort of a difference it makes until they get one, I recently installed one on my roommates laptop and he was amazed at how much snappier it is.

No system over $700 should be without an SSD these days. Get something like an adata sp550 480gb, you won't look back.

each will tell you a different opinion but ill start the debate with x99 for sure for streaming + you never know if you will end up getting into content cretion ( youtube vids)

Well, the CPU support is different, so it really depends what CPUs you're comparing.

EDIT: X99 is generally higher performance, but not necessarily "better" for a certain task.

Z170 is fine for majority of stuff people would do,  imo. X99 is high end with lots of cores for multitasking.

Whats your budget and full build?

Probably z170 as don't need much cpu for streaming with nvec and quicksync and gaming like the higher frequency.

im not sure on us prices but i think a normal supernova might add 20 dollars on top but imo well worth it

Only my opinion but I think the x99 mobo and broadwell-e cpus are only worth it for professional content creators, basically if your PC is your job.

I'm sure lots will disagree with me though ?

The thing here is that 6700K/5820K + motherboard is same price which makes 5820K superior in every other thing except single core performance.

You should say "makes the 6700k superior in every other thing except rendering"

Because the truth is that 99.999% of everything you can do on a PC uses 8 or less threads.

The only thing that a 12 thread x99 CPU is better at is CERTAIN rendering programs, not all.

Even after effects is still faster with a 6700k due to the skylake architecture.

Overall, gaming and streaming will be better on a 6700k. Rendering videos in certain programs like premiere would be a bit faster on a 5820k/6800k, but unless you do this as your job and have to render hours of videos per day, the few extra minutes are not worth the extra price of X99 and lower performance in all other tasks.
