Attaching Motherboard to Case

Totunforster

I have a

ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII FORMULA LGA 1151 Intel Z170 Motherboard

and a

NZXT H440 STEEL Mid Tower Case.

However the Motherboard has a backplate on it that prevents the screws that came with the case from attaching it as they are not long enough.

Should I just take off the backplate or go to the store and buy longer screws and if so is there any special screws I should buy?

Do you have motherboard standoffs installed? The back plate should always clear the motherboard tray if no cut out is present.

Have you pushed the backplate into the cutout, it should make a little clip in noise. Then double check all your standoffs and try again.

Yeah there isnt much room to do that. :/

Give it a little more force, take the rear panel off, and push it in with both hands from either side.

Have you checked the standoffs are installed in the right holes?

Sorry not the backplate on the mobo. I meant the io shield into the case's rear cutout. Sorry bad wording

Scratch all that, I see what you mean now, Just buy some slightly longer screws and fiber washers. The 2~mm of backplate on that board, will have meant to io shield wont line up if you take the backplate off the mobo.

alright, any non-magnetic screws will do right?

take a sample to somewhere like radioshack (*if thats stll a thing I'm an aussie). they should be 6-32 but take a standoff to check, they can be magnetic the pcb is made in such a way that a conductive screw in the right mounting hole wont damage anything. I like putting fiber washers under all my mobo screws because it keeps the screw in place and has alittle give when tightening them up.

Actually, it's not always a good idea to put fiber washers under the screw heads. In some situations the ground connection made by the screw helps with shielding, noise reduction, etc.

Most standoffs use common #6-32 screws, but some use metric screws similar to those that are used to mount SSDs and optical drives. Take one of the too-short screws that came with it, to a hardware store (or local computer repair shop) and get screws that fit and are slightly longer. Be sure not to get screws that are too long - you don't want them to bottom out in the standoffs.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.
