At Florida International University, the researchers have created a new hard drive platter that allows for the writing and reading of 3D magnetic data.

On a conventional hard drive platter, a magnetic site stores just a single bit here, a triple stack of magnetic layers, each magnetic site can store up to eight bits of data (north/north/north, south/south/south, N/N/S, N/S/S, etc.)

I wonder about the format, ntfs(dont quote me i just woke up so im probably messing up) only holds 3tb or 4tb with a patch. Anyways this would cause even more problems if there is a failure, losing 100tb, that would be hell.

your thinking of MBR

 

 

The 2-TB barrier is the result of this 32-bit limitation. Because the maximum number that can be represented by using 32-bits is 4,294,967,295, this translates to 2.199 TB of capacity by using 512-byte sectors (approximately 2.2 TB). Therefore, a capacity beyond 2.2 TB is not addressable by using the MBR partitioning scheme

 

just use GBT which is supported on Windows which hold up to 9.4 zettabytes

 

MBR is like 32 bit

while GBT is like 64 Bit

Im just waiting to see when we will have high-res holographic movies that take 2TB of storage and we will feel short with a 200 TB hard drive!

not like internet progressed any recently...

Internet will catch up. It's inevitable. Google Fiber and other similar services will become commonplace once technology like this becomes commercially available.

I haven't even filled up my 1TB yet and they are starting to develop 100tb drives. But if the hard drive fails you would lose lots of data.
