Old.... hmmh how old is too old? was'nt that long ago since I got it... it feels like atleast.. not arguing, just sucking up info...

it's based on an old Platform, and the Architecture went a way that's contraproductive for gamers.

More Cores, but less power per Core.

In fact, the best AMD CPU right now is competing against the Intel Sandybridghe generation. That's Generation 2. We are now at Generation 6, and 7 is right around the corner.

This CPU is not much better in terms of "Performance per Core / per Clock), because of how the CPU is built.

Making it a bad choice for gamers.

A latest basic i5 with 3.2 Ghz beats the FX 9570 with 8x 4.7 Ghz+, and consumes 1/3 of the Power only.

The only way to reduce the hard CPU Bottleneck is:

- Hope for GOOD DX12 implementations, since that reduce CPU Bottlenecks

- Switch to intel Skylake, and watch how it completely obliberates your FX crap

- Wait like 4 Months or so, and switch to AMD Zen, which get's all our hopes high, in catching up to Intel, and providing a good alternative. some Pre-Benchmarks were pretty promising. But i doubt it will be a flop, since the performance difference to the current generations seems to be very big. And also, the Platform itself is completely new. DDR4 with maybe Quad Channel support, and every latest connection stuff.

Since you don't like intel, for whatever reason, wait for Zen and upgrade.

The currend AMD Generation is just not a good CPU, and was not even recommendable when it launched (Especially not that 220w Heater that was overclocked, costs more than a faster i5, and needs an expensive Motherboard to provide all the power. In this case, Intel has a better bang for the buck)

As for the GTX 1060: Why would you want to watercool that? This is a 120 watt card, and with undervolting you can make it a 90 watt card (got mine to 0.85 Volt, at 1870 Mhz~). There are custom models, like teh Zotac AMP!, that are basicly "SILENT".

Even the MSI Gaming (X) is a wiser choice than Water cooling, because the MSI Gaming is literaly unhearable out of a silent system, and it stays at <67°C. So.... Water cooling here only for optical reasons ^^ Otherwise, not worth, since it makes it much more expensive.

But: You "can" get a 1070 or 1080, even with your CPU bottlenecking it. It will still be faster than a 1060.

But then i would suggest switching over to AMD ZEN in a few months, in that case, it's totally fine living a few months with a bottleneck.

And you can always transform "too much GPU power" into DSR.

What socket is the zen? wondering if it'll fit in my Formula-z or if that's scrap too

this was their claim that its same or faster. (might be XEON, might be something better, rumors that it was 6900k not oc  )

read more here

from what i see it might be interesting to wait for ZEN, if it is as good as they say, we may see new CPU war :P

No, AMD Zen will come with AM4(+), that will be (thank god for that) a complete new Platform.

And that's GOOD. AM3+ is an old Fart, has no native USB3 / M.2 support, PCIe 3.0 if i'm right...

That current Chipsets are based of the 800 chipset series, which came out like.. 2008 or 2009. That needs to be replaced completely.

Oh co*k then... I'll have to swap the lot to get the zen then... well with the current situation in the Oil industry here (where I work) I'll live with the bottleneck of a watercooled 1070 i think... as long as it out performs my two 570's I'm happy...

on a side note, anyone care to buy a slightly stained soul?

so... I'm currently running 2x GTX570 DCII's in SLI, but it's just not enough, the cards are too old I am afraid, so I have put together a little list of cards I like, Has anyone got any pro's or cons on these?

1080
1070
1060
980
R9 Fury
XFX Radeon RX 480 8GB RS

Now I should note, that I plan on watercooling the card(s) I end up with, and I know that is not possible with the 1060 but I threw it in there based on price actually...

oh and if someone has a different card to recommend, shout!

I do alot of gaming and rendering on high end games so that's what I need it for!

I would say go for the GTX 1070 due to amazing price to performance ratio and also lower power consumption than your current setup! :)

  • 4 weeks later...

So I just installed my new watercooled msi gtx1070 gaming x, and once my windows stopped arguing and started behaving I ran Heaven and compared the results to my friends Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz (3392MHz) x4

NOT happy with the results... he beats my score by 2k points and his is running in gaming mode.. mine is OC'd to 2k core clock...

Could this be correct? i had to reset windows to get it to work properly, was having issues with glitching and hangs in GTA5... I'll try reseting my BIOS today to make sure there is no problems there, even going to try using my second PCI-1 16x slot as nr 1 has a bit of sag to it from one of the 570's

Remember reading that some company, EVGA perhaps?, allows installing a waterblock and still retain the warranty. Take note of this possibly.

GTX 1080 --> too expensive, and will get a severe price cut if/when the 1080ti launch, not quite fast enough for 4K

GTX 1070 --> sweetspot for high-end 1440p gaming

GTX 1060 --> sweetspot for 1080p gaming, good price/performance

GTX 980 --> usually same price or more expensive than 1060, only 4GB of video memory, older architecture...most likely not worth it unless you find a huge discount.

R9 Fury --> AMD POS, only 4GB of video memory, slower than 1060 in most games, more expensive.

RX 480 8GB --> usually more expensive or about the same as the GTX 1060, slower than a 1060 in 98% of the games out there, about the same in the other 2% as a 1060, faster in 1 game (hitman)
