Which to upgrade first?? CPU or GPU??

Yeahboy13

Hello,

I don't know which to upgrade first.. If want to upgrade my GPU to Sapphire Nitro RX 480 4GB. I think it will bottleneck my CPU. If it bottlenecks so bad, I'm gonna save up and buy an I5-6600 or gonna wait for the Zen to release.. Thanks

SPECS:

A8-5600k

8GB DDR3 1333 mhz

550w PSU

CPU definitely. Most modern GPU's minus maybe the RX460 would be bottlenecked with that CPU.

Little thing: even an i5 won't always be able to feed the rx 480 with enough information.

That said, an i5 is still fast enough to push out 60fps for hopefully at least 2 years.

So the i5 is a decent upgrade, but it is possible you have to get rid of it sooner than you would like.

Waiting for zen isn't worth it because it's too far away, just get an i5 :P

I think it's important to first know what GPU you have now, before answering. If you're running integrated graphics, then I'd certainly upgrade that first.

I don't have a dedicated GPU. Just a potato HD 7560D IGPU..

Then a new CPU probably won't give you much of a boost for gaming purposes since you'd still be stuck with integrated graphics - I've got some numbers that suggest a theoretical 30% boost with an intel 6500k. But even ignoring all of that, your CPU should adequately accommodate a RX 480 for the time being, and you would see significant gains and only then should you need to worry about your CPU.

Also, I'd look into overclocking the CPU if possible, as that will help lessen its performance impact on the GPU.
