Okay, so I am looking into buying a good graphics card for 1080p gaming. I just got Rise of the Tomb Raider for an early B-Day present, and I am planning to buy some other games as well. So what graphics card should I look for, and what CPU should I buy to go with it? (I am thinking a GTX 970 4GB w a Intel core i5?)

RX 470 is pretty good for 1080p.

Core i5 is a great choice, i5 6400 should be enough

RAM: 32GB DDR4
GPU: GTX 1080

Storage: 1TB 850 Evo, 1TB HDD, bunch of external hard drives

Laptop:

-Overkill Dell XPS

Fully maxed out early 2017 Dell XPS 15, GTX 1050 4GB, 7700HQ, 1TB nvme SSD, 32GB RAM, 4k display. 97Whr battery :x
Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

For the best 1080p experience, max settings on all games and +60 fps, you need a 1060 minimum. 1080p +100fps or 1440p on many games with max settings for +60 fps, you need a 1070. If you want over +144fps at 1080p or +100fps on most games at 1440p, 1080 it is. If you want over +160fps on 1080p or +120fps on most games at 1440p and over, Titan X Pascal it is. If you the most budget friendly 1080p experience but dont mind sometimes not having Anti-aliasing maxed on all modern games, the RX 480 it is. Those would be the only cards id stick for now.

GTX 1060 6GB is your best 1080p @60Hz card. Sure you could get a 1070 or 1080 or something like that, but they would be overkill. Sure you could get something cheaper like an RX 470/480, but they are going to have you turn down more graphics settings in some games in order to maintain 60 fps (although if you don't care about fps cap or extreme graphic quality, then those may be the cards for you)

As far as i5's go, the 6400, 6500, or 6600 are awesome. Some may say the 6400, but with how little cost difference it is between these CPU's, going up to a 6600 is worth the price when you compare the total performance gains against the cost of an entire computer. Having performance headroom is a good idea. skimping out on 40 bucks for a much better CPU, in a several hundred dollar computer doesn't make alot of sense IMO.

My Budget is whatever I get for my birthday (in a couple weeks) plus about $500 dollars. What I'm on right now is an old laptop with a broken screen, that plays minecraft at 20 FPS. So I am looking to make a completely new PC.

I agree, but given the almost neglegible price difference between the 470 and the 480, theres no doubt getting a 470 is a pretty bad idea, unless VAT and other crazy taxes are out of order in the place where a purchaser lives. Also, you always get the "K" when possible :P

Even my 1st and only (no longer have it) 2009 Toshiba A170-17Z didnt have 20 fps on Minecraft. It was more like 40-60 :p.

Never had problems with it for these many years and only reformated it twice lmao...

Make a 2300€ computer build, switches over 7 parts and reformats it over 10 times. Better experience indeed XD.

do you mean situations like 6600k over 6600? I disagree. There is quite a large budget difference between a 6600 and cheap motherboard vs 6600k + cooler + Z170 (even a cheap Z170). Granted there is also a decent performance difference to be gained as well, but if that were the only thing to consider then everyone would be sporting 6950X with Titan XP's in SLI.

It is completely sensible and reasonable to get a 6600 and not a 6600k or a 6700 and not 6700k and so forth, depending on your budget.

Well yeah you got that one right, you have to get a better coleer or better motherboard with more power phases and overcurrent protection/dual bios mode, but even so the 20$ difference now in the future could be neglegible. I regret my decision in the past of getting the 4670 :/, i could have gotten the 4670K but hey "dumb" knowledge back in 2013 :(.

1080p Ultra brilliant fps with comfortable framerates at 1440p - Rx 480 4gb with i5 6500 ( the performance gain in 1060 3gb is just negligible in gameplay , and you definitely need more than 3gb for 1080p gaming)

Affordable 1080p Max setting Ultra comfortable framerates with occasional dabble to 1440p - Rx 470 4gb with i5 6400

Extra affordable 1080p max settings ultra at comfortable fps - Rx 470 4gb with i3 6100

Go with an RX 470 or a similarly priced RX 480, since the RX 470 is overpriced.

For the CPU, an i5-6400 or a i5-6500 and a H-170 motherboard should be enough.

If you want overclocking, get a i5-6600K and a Z-170 motherboard.

The cheapest RX 470 I found is this Gigabyte G1 Gaming: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125896&cm_re=rx_470-_-14-125-896-_-Product

The cheapest RX 480 I found is this Sapphire Nitro+: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202225&cm_re=rx_480-_-14-202-225-_-Product

The 970 honestly isn't a bad idea if you're getting it at a good price.  Used I see them going for around $160, roughly 25% less than current gen equivalents.

I wouldn't recommend the 4gb 470 or 480 anymore than I would recommend the 3gb 1060 if you want to avoid vRAM bottleneck in the long run.  Value-wise I think a used 970 makes more sense than those options if the option is there for you.

If you go for one of the newer cards, future proof with the 8gb 470/480, or the 6gb 1060.

OP: Don't get a 970. Get a GTX 1060 or RX 480, or (older and/ or more power hungry) R9 390/X or 290X. Those are around the same price point.

at 1080p i would recomend a rx470, rx480, or gtx 1060. last gen cards (gtx 970) are not really relevant right now. as far as a cpu, i would go for a 6600k if overclocking is your thing or a 6500 if it isnt.

I find it hard to understand the use of the word "relevant" in this context.

A GTX 970, 980, etc, will simply consume more energy and warm up more easily to give you the same performance as newer cards. Yest, the best 10XX is better than the best 9XX, but both lineups overlap. Cards don't stop working when a new GPU is launched. A GTX 970 is fully capable of handling 1080p gaming, as it was 6 months ago. At the right price, is as valid as any other choice.
