Hello!
Because there are some problems with my current rig, I want to change/upgrade a few of my parts. A few notes before I begin. If you want to change any parts, please give me the PCPartPicker link. Also, my budget is no more than $2200 USD. This system will be used for gaming as well as school work. The games I play are not very graphics-intensive, so please don't change the graphics card to something crazy good, because I don't need it. I plan on running one monitor, which is 1080p 144Hz. I might get a second monitor in the future, but that is unlikely. The only peripheral I need is a keyboard, which is listed. I do not need a mouse or headphones.

My Current Build:
Intel Core i7-6700K
Cooler Master Vortex Plus
MSI Z170A Gaming M5
120GB SSD (don't know where it's from, my dad used it before me and painted it)
Toshiba 2TB HDD
EVGA GeForce GTX 950 (yes, I know this card with the 6700K doesn't make sense, I had originally planned for an i3)
EVGA 650GQ
Fractal Design Define R5
Logitech Illuminated Keyboard
Razer Naga 2014
Logitech G230

What I Am Thinking of Upgrading To:
Intel Core i7-6700K
Corsair H100i v2
Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 6
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD
Toshiba 2TB HDD
Gigabyte G1 Gaming GeForce GTX 1060
Corsair RM650x
Fractal Design Define R5
Corsair Strafe RGB

I also might get custom cables for my 24-pin ATX connecter, 8-pin power, as well as GPU power cable.

Thanks!

Unless you're definitely getting custom cables then the GQ is a solid PSU, I know the RMx is better but the GQ is already a very solid PSU where from a money perspective, you're kinda wasting money :P

Same goes for the motherboard, if you already have a decent z170 motherboard, why would you need to change it?

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Yes I know the GQ is a good PSU, but I really want a fully-modular PSU, and I don't like the style of the stock cables. The reason I'm getting a new mobo is that the USB 3.0 connector is in a horrible place on the board. I even bent the pins on the connector trying to put the cable in.
Thanks for the input!

I am getting a 1060...... Anyway, the problem with the USB 3.0 slot is that it's on the very edge of the board, and parallel to the board, which makes it hard af to plug something in there. Also, the Gaming 6 looks a lot cooler in my case than the Gaming M5.

Here's my recommended computer build that will fit all of your computing needs.

There's absolutely no need to get a liquid based CPU cooler.

The air-based Noctua CPU cooler that was selected does a great job and it's super quiet.

almost $400 for 2TB of 7200? That must be a merchant error.

I have that exact cpu, mouse and your original m5 motherboard! Which 3.0 port were you having issues with? There are only two 2.0’s very top of the board. Everything else is 3.0 or 3.1. I really like the cables on my EVGA 650 GS. They are black, just straight up black everywhere, it’s awesome. I am about to order a 1440p monitor and a 1070, plus a few other things I am researching.

Your CPU cooler is dependent on how far you are going to overclock your CPU. Maybe you just want super low temperatures, hopefully you don’t have too much humidity. But from what I understand Noctua is the way to go if you are not liquid cooling or going with the tried and true hyper 212 evo.

Your hardware is very decent, but with the 1060, I suspect, you are sticking to 1080p. So, this would be a very high quality 1080p build, very high quality.

Have you had any thoughts on Audio? I am thinking of spending some good money on speakers and acoustic foam.

I am pretty sure I need a liquid cooler since it's pretty hot where I live.  Also, may I ask you why you went with an H170 board when I have a 6700K?  Also, I will never use a Seagate hard drive again, since most of the ones I got failed on me.  Also, I really don't need a new case.  My current case is fine.

I have heard that the H440 doesn't have very good air flow, and the temperature outside isn't really helping that.  I really don't want to change too much, since I do have limited money and I don't want to buy a ton of new stuff.  The switch I like best is the brown.  Also, I really don't need 3TB, since I rarely do school projects on my gaming pc.

Also, is it good that my CPU is running at 66 degrees C while idle?  I'm pretty sure I should get a better CPU cooler because of this.

Thanks!

You never stated that you wanted to keep your current computer case in your 1st post.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the H170 motherboard. You can overclock the processor with it. I'm not certain what your issue with it is.

Not sure what kind of issues you had with Seagate HDDs, but again, you did not state in your 1st post that you did not want any Seagate HDDs.

The Noctua air based CPU coolers are one of the best in the CPU cooling sector.

Read up on the industry reviews of this. (don't read up on reddit crap, it's worthless)  It will do the job just fine in any kind of temperature.

Regardless, I have revised my computer build based on this new information.

Oh, I did not realize that I did not say that I wanted to keep my case and no Seagate HDDs.  Thank you for telling me that.  Also, thank you for telling me that you can overclock in H170, I did not know that.  Thanks!

no. you can't overclock on h170 motherboards anymore. intel has already patched that and prevented anyone from overclocking with a non-z170 motherboard.

Thanks!

66 on idle is kind of sketchy. What cooler is producing that idle temperature? Are you running the stock clock? My Noctua 12s cooler was like 36 on idle with motherboard temperature of 33. I love that $60 cooler because it is hardly even working. I might buy another 120mm to go push pull on the cooler and another 140mm noctua case fan, for a total of 4 noctua fans in my system. I live in the deep south where it is above 90 degrees 90% of the time, haha.

I’m biased, but maybe you should look at the Phanteks p400 I have, I love it A LOT. The H440 is pretty decent, but you are right about the airflow. Same thing with the S340, the only not great thing is the airflow, in my opinion.

For cases I would go with the p400, s340, fractal r5 that you picked, fractal r4 window, the fractal define s is pretty sweet, the phanteks enthoo pro, or maybe the CM MasterCase 5.

For harddrives, maybe you should go for the tried and true WD blue 1 TB or what I just orderedfor another $20 you get an extra TB of WD red. It is a little slower, 5400rpm, but I think for the money it is super reliable. 2TB will probably be around 70-90 for some decent 7200. But all in all, HDD are really just about personal preference and luck, I think.

Mechanical keyboard: I think for the money that Corsair gaming strafe is a really solid choice. If you spending under $100 then I would strongly consider that. Then, I would look at RosehillLogitech G610, or CM Storm QuickFire TK

You will keep your 6700k obviously, your mouse, maybe some case fans?, your headset, and what else? Do you absolutely have to replace your power supply and motherboard?

The cooler that is currently cooling my CPU is a Cooler Master Vortex Plus, and I have not overclocked.

I will be buying new case fans, but the CPU stays, case stays, HDD and SSD stay, mouse, monitor, and headset stay.  In all honesty, I don't need a new mobo and PSU, it's more for aesthetic reasons.
