8120 Failing in Prime 95

Hey guys,

Today was the first day i have used Prime 95 to run tests on my CPU, and i ran the test for 8 hours.

Within the first hour, it said that my Core 6 and Core 8 cores were shut down and not running.

I only have a tiny overclock (4.0 ghz) and I am cooling with an H80i, and using corsair link saw that my CPU temps never went above 40 degree Celcius; and i have also run a memory diagnostic and a memory test to ensure that memory is not the problem.

Does anybody have any ideas as to why two cores would fail?

The error was that they rounded above .40 which i dont even know what that means.

Thanks.

you might need some extra voltage. add a tad bit

Most failures are due to lack of voltage. If you have a dual bios setting, set one to your overclock, and one to stock speed and voltages. Switch to stock speed and test again. If that fails at all, it may point to an issue with the processor itself. If you don't have dual bios, then increase your voltage a little and retest.

I increased my voltage a little bit, still didnt work. And now i have increased my voltage SIGNIFICANTLY and it still will not pass all 8 cores. any other ideas? Or does my particular chip just not like it?

it could be a bad cpu.very uncommon for a cpu to be partially DOA but it happens

you could try contacting AMD and asking for RMA or something.

it could also be an issue with P95,I think I've seen some reports that bulldozer/piledriver had issues with it,though I can't find any right now.

also make sure that the motherboard, the area near the cpu that would otherwise be cooled by the downdraft created by the stock cooler, isn't overheating.

just try feeling the vrm's,heatsinks, etc and see if they are hot to the touch.

The socket area is very cool. I have tons of cooling in my case. It may be a prime 95 thing i guess... but for now i just turned down the clock, and it is running fine with no DOA's. Kinda dissapointed that i can only get to 4.0ghz though.
