What to upgrade next?

Go to solution Solved by 19_blackie_73,

new cpu and mobo first, will improve your work more and bring down your power bill. You woudn't benefit that much from a 10series card with that cpu.

EDIT: sth like this:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£210.00 @ Amazon UK)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Advanced C1 50.5 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler  (£49.98 @ Ebuyer)
Motherboard: MSI Z170A GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (£142.06 @ More Computers)
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory  (£66.99 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £469.03
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

+ cablemod cables
I included a new cooler cause h90 isn't the best AIO and this will run more silent.
And if you want to go overkill, get the 6700k

My current build is in the signature box. Based on that what would you guys recommend I upgrade. I have been thinking processor, should I move from red to blue or stick it out and give zen a go? Or upgrade my graphics card to an nvidia 1000 series and hope my ageing CPU can last a few more years?

So now some info on what is to be spent and my needs:

  • My budget is absolute maximum £600 preferably under £500.
  • I am a chemistry student so may have to run some light modelling programs (the PCs in the department run i3-3000 series and do some relatively complex modelling in sub 10 minutes so this shouldn't be my most demanding work load).
  • I enjoy photography and edit photos in Lightroom and Photoshop a lot (I run GPU acceleration on both programs), I occasionally make time lapses and hope to start doing them more often.
  • I do game a fair amount, I prefer an RPG or RTS to an FPS but they also have their place.
  • If I have some money left over I would like to replace the black heat-shrinked cables from my PSU with some sleeved ones (probably CableMod, however I am open to suggestion) but hardware is the main thing so if no money is left over then this will have to wait.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

MoBo: GIGABYTE GA-AX370-Gaming 5     CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600X       Cooler: Corsair H115i with Noctua NF-A14 Fans     GPU: MSI GeForce GTX970 Gaming 4G

get a new cpu and mobo, and decide if you wanna reuse the ram or not. the fx 6300 isn't a very good cpu and the am3+ socket is a dead end.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

@19_blackie_73 @herman mcpootis @MrSha256 Thanks for that. I had a feeling it would be the MoBo and CPU. The question now is what to get? Should I wait for Zen and AM4+ or go for a skylake CPU? Not sure I need Haswell/Broadwell-E?

there's no need for the 6core intel chips and they will blow your budget.

sth like i mentioned above should suffice. BUT i forgot ram... you will need some ddr4
