So my friend has a rig that managed to bend his skylake i5-6600. But he was using the stock cooler. I know skylake has bending problems with some heavy aftermarket coolers but this was the stock one. What do you suggest he should do. He also just RMAed his motherboard for a different issue, and downtime should be kept to a minimum.

There are no bending issues with skylake CPUs.

If he bent his CPU then he either has an incompatible CPU+mobo or he does not know how to install it correctly.

I am the one who built it and I can confirm that it was installed correctly. I can also confirm that the parts are compatible and that skylake has bending issues. http://www.pcgamer.com/intel-skylake-cpus-are-bending-under-the-pressure-of-some-coolers/ The CPU looks identical to the one in the picture and it is bent in the right place.

First of all, there is one confirmed issue of a CPU bending and that was because some idiots tightened the screws on a heatsink using a hand drill instead of an electric screwdriver.

Second, none of the mounting specifications were changed, and all intel stock coolers comply with the specs made by intel themselves.

Third, again you either installed the CPU in the wrong orientation, didn't lower the retention bracket correctly, or are using an incompatible CPU+mobo.

To be honest, I have no idea. I think the retention arm was what bent it actually.

I mean he would have had to put some serious force on the retention arm to bend the CPU, like extremely uncomfortable on your fingers force. You would completely destroy the motherboard pins before you would bend that CPU.

The parts are compatable, but that is no longer the issue, it is what he should do now, that the damage is done.

How do you know they are compatible? Is this a new CPU and motherboard?

And what models?

Now you can try RMAing it to intel but I doubt they will give you a new one since it is user error, but you can try anyway.

And the CPU is new, not used right?

It was in the correct orientation with the notches lined up?

And when you lowered the bracket, the black cover popped out?

yes yes and yes. I have several other successful skylake builds that i have done. The only thing affected is RAM channel A

Some pictures of it would be nice.

Still, try RMA to intel and hope they accept it.

yeah, but we are leaving it for now, because it is stable and we are both busy now and any more down time is bad. Will try to get pics eventually, but probably not going to happen.

So then it's not bent...?

If it was bent like this, it would not be working.

It is bent, but magically the only thing dead is the RAM slots a1 and a2. probably some PCIe lanes too or something, but is performing as expected.

Is it drastic? Enough to affect the lands from contacting the pins? RAM not working is more of a motherboard issue usually.
