I have an old 2007 eMachines running Windows Vista, but my computer has started to slow down.

Model: ET1161-07

Rating: 3.0 Windows experience index: unrated

CPU: AMD Athlon Dual Core 4050e

RAM: 3 GB

System Type: 32 bit only

lubuntu/xubuntu if you want an ubuntu derivative, manjaro if you want a beginner arch distro, or puppy linux for max performance, though not so beginner friendly

Don't try to run a full-blown recent desktop Linux on it. It will run slower than Windows ever would.

 

I can recommend OpenBSD, it runs great even on my old 32-bit Thinkpad.

Write in C.

Anything will work, just with one caveat:  No GUI

Recent Linux distros will run like dog crap on an old rig. You want something lightweight like Lubuntu, or have a Google for "lightweight Linux distro".
