Would this be a good folding rig?

It's the motherboard (Supermicro H8QM3-2), CPUs (4x Opteron 8386), and RAM (64 GB DDR2).

 

More interesting to me would be if it was capable of doing the bigadv projects.

Hmm, yes and no. It is a quad core, series 8000 - so 16 core, so you meet the min. Problem is 8101 and 8102 projects are pretty brutal. Those you may have a problem hitting. 8103-5 though should be ok.

 

If this was 16 core, 6000 series, no problem. Myself, I have the 4 x 8425 which is 24 core and it handles them ok...

8386 are the absolute lowest you can go and still make a 8101...

Since it's probably got the latest BIOS flash (coming from a server environment), all I'll need is a PSU and boot drive.

 

With any luck, we'll have another 4P folding machine on the team.

Don't count on it - after 15 years in datacenter's and servers one thing we hardly ever do is update core things, like BIOS - if i ain't broke, don't fix it.

You're right it's more than likely fine but since the outside of the bag is conductive I don't see a reason to keep it there.

I NEVER, EVER put gear on static bags. They are designed to channel the extra static current on the outside of the bag. Putting it on the bag, even when powered off, and working on you gear, while moseying around and such, can have a higher chance of static discharge, even when your system is off. Bet you standing on carpet? :)

 

Soon as you pull something out of the static bag, put the bag away and never use it again. Get a box or something to put the board on while you work. That is safer. And, you can also power it up while on the box...
