Budget 1080p 144Hz ideas?

porina

I've been debating at tasting 144 Hz and seeing if I'm missing something having stuck with 60Hz since forever. To that, I'm debating buying a budget display. I considered 1440p or 4k, but I'm not convinced enough to make the bigger jump.

So, the question is, what is out there? In a random search, top of my candidate list is the AOC G2460PF. 24" also with freesync, from £193 locally to me, this is not only cheap but freesync is a bonus, even if none of my AMD GPUs actually support it. Reviews elsewhere are no worse than similar non-freesync models in that price class. Any other suggestions? Uses may be for PC gaming, and console gaming. I know consoles don't do 144 Hz, but my current TV input lag is too long so I could use another display anyway.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

Don't get the AOC G2460PF. I had the AOC G2460PF and it sucked for two reasons. The colors on the pannel are atrocious even when calibrated. The BenQ 2411Z had better or similar colors to my old ACER monitor. The AOC G2460PF also has an issue of flickering after alt tabbing out of programs or games. It's annoying to have a smooth 144hz view of web browsing but then turn to shit because you alt tabed in and out of a game.

Edit:I returned the AOC and got the BenQ monitor instead. Been pretty happy since.

That Viewsonic is a good pick, just helped this guy out last night who was looking for a cheap 1080p 144Hz also. This monitor came out to be one of his top picks.

Thanks for the comment and suggestions. Do you have experience of the other monitors other than the Benq?

The Viewsonic and LG are out as they don't seem widely available.

The Benq XL2411Z also made my shortlist, but I didn't mention it as it is a bit higher price and doesn't have freesync. Oh, I do have a freesync card after all, looks like my ancient 260X is supported although I'm not sure how that'll do with 144 Hz...

The Nixeus Vue NX-VUE24A I have not come across before. A bit more costly again, but not enough to be a deal breaker.

Guess I'll do deeper research on those last two.

Really nothing wrong with the BenQ XL2411Z. Looking at your sig, you have a 980TI in your rig. I don't really think adaptive sync is really a deal breaker. No point in going to a older card just for adaptive sync if you cant even run the  games you want to play at above 144fps. The only downside I could think of in terms of the BenQ 2411z is the lack of displayport.

I think you should really reconsider removing the AOC off your list. It's honestly a horrible monitor due to the color and the glitch with alt tabbing. You can't even use overdrive when using 144hz setting. It may not be a big deal to normal users. I play CS GO and I require my monitors to have the fastest and lowest input/latency. AOC was a big no for me in the end.

I don't need freesync, but the question in my mind is, if it is available in this price class without other negatives, why not get it? It would be better if it had G-sync but I guess I would no longer be in budget territory.

For the intended uses, I'd connect to the monitor over DVI or HDMI so lack of DP is not a problem.

I'd further add, while my main system has the 980Ti, I'd likely use any new monitor with my VR rig which has a 1070. Still no slouch.

Decided not to spend any more time searching for something possibly better, and have ordered one. Will find out tomorrow how it goes.

Given I have no plans to get a high end AMD GPU (doesn't exist yet), it doesn't make much sense to compromise or pay more for freesync.

You honestly won't regret it.

BenQ is a well know and a lot of esports team use there monitors for a reason. The 2411Z is practically the 2430T without the fancy switch button.

Monitor now unboxed and connected. I stupidly connected it an R9 280X system first as it was closer to me, and I gave up trying to find anything in AMD's drivers. I forgot practically next to it I had a 1070 system. Much better, turned it up to 144 Hz and away I go. I had to lower brightness a low, and right now it is ok but colours feel faded and washed out, and I need to poke around the settings some more.

Don't have any games on that system other than VR ones, so installing Portal now as something old and should hit stupid frame rates easily :) Will say desktop mouse pointer movement does look smoother, but maybe a little blurry.

And done some testing in Portal. I didn't notice anything different when I started on the 144 Hz display, but when I went to my 60 Hz regular monitor, yup, it felt less smooth.

As general comments so far, the viewing angle on the TN panel wasn't as bad as I feared. I do need to be more face on to the monitor for best display, where I normally like to look down on it. Side angle was not bad at all and I'd even say it was usable for multi-monitor. I still need to do more messing around with settings and see if I can get the colour/contrast better.

Anyone have experience with the AOC gl2460pqu, ive heard its pretty much the same as the benqxl2411z but with less features and it actually works fine compared to the gl2460pf. Also gonna uppgrade to 144hz and on my list is:

1. aoc gl2460pqu

2. asus vg248qe

3. benq xl2411z

thanks in advance for any help

Asus VG248QE isnt a bad monitor. There are certainly better monitors without the issues it has.

Benq XL2411Z is most popular for cheap 144Hz and people dont complain about it. I own tier higher XL2430T and its flawless. I get better colours than lower tier but in that lower tier they all have same colours anyway.

Get Benq ! There is a lot of feedback on it and videos and help if u need it.
