I haven't played attention to the nvidia news for a bit but have there been any announcements at all about the 800-series GPU's such as a "competition" to AMD's mantle or will it just be a power efficiency improvement and smaller manufacturing process?

We have heard they are coming in q1 of next year but nothing else (rumor). A they did say they had a mantle like program already though i think.

IMO the 800 series will be slighter better than AMD in every tier. Lets face it, they do kinda have the upper hand right...

why would they release the 800 so soon after the 700 series? it makes no sense, atleast 3/4 of a year from now i think

I agree with you, 700 series are pretty good the way they sit. Also as drivers get optimized they get better with time.

I think taking a break for a bit and let the dust settle will be a good thing.

For money, it's the same with new cars. ex: middle of 2010 they release 2011 model even though it's still 2010, middle of 2011 they release 2012, middle of 2012 they release 2013 and so on and so on. Some marketing twat 20 years ago thought it would be a good idea and people bought into it so they keep doing it. Nvidia knows people will buy the latest and greatest tech regardless of how soon it's released after the last iteration so they bank on that and release new tech every year.

releasing a new series after 6 months is shooting themself in the foot. if they do that the 700 wont make nearly as much money as they could make off it.

With AMD stepping up their game with the R9 series, we should see some BIG improvements from Nvidia... Finally.

well they only stepped it up in the 290 series so maybe nvidia wont need to do anything for a while besides adjusting pricing

Don't compare R 200 series with 800 series, 800 series is 1 gen ahead.

Wow, quite the genius deduction, did you figure that out all by yourself?

The Nvidia 800 series (Maxwell) are 20nm based, so they will not be released until 20nm production is mature enough.
20nm production at TSMC will begin in Febuary of 2014, however intial production would be reserved for smaller chips like ARM processors from Apple & Qualcomm due to the high defect risk & low yield, ramp up would start in May so expect high performance 20nm chips to start production by then.
So we should see cards from Nvidia & AMD show up in summer of 2014.

http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/32578-20nm-high-performance-chips-in-2h-2014

I would also like to point out that historically AMD always jumps on a new manufacturing process earlier than Nvidia.
I expect 20nm to be no different, AMD will likely release their Pirate Islands series of graphics cards ahead of Nvidia's Maxwell.

wtf are you on about? Don't be daft, people were happy comparing the 700 series to 7000, and 6000 to 600 series, that's just how things work. You compare the latest from amd to latest from nvidia. It's only logical.

No doubt you can compare it that way.

But if someone compares the GTX 780 to the 7970 and say something along the lines of "Oh GTX 780 is faster than 7970, AMD sucks hard balls" then there's definitely something wrong.

20mm will be expensive, so be prepared for it.

I doubt Nvidia will release their 20mm lineup in Q1 considering the GK100 is still untapped.

You mean GK110? And it's pretty "tapped", considering they can't enable all of the SMX because of the inherently flawed architecture the GK110 relies on. I predict the alleged titan -ultra being 5-7% faster than the titan. Maybe 10, but I expect a lot of problems with their cores. And they should be even more expensive the ne insanely priced titan. Also, you must know, because of the complexity of the GK110 it si very expensive to make, so it will remain an expensive card. Even after the alleged price drop, if it ever happens in the first place.

Anybody who says and thinks something like that shouldn't be taken seriously in our circles anyway. The person would obviously be very biased and/or unaducated on the subject. :)

Yeah sorry GK110 - Personally I'm not convinced Nvidia is willing to activate all 2866 Cores on the Titan, starting to creep along side their Quadro lineup if that were the case.

That's just my 2 cents though.
