Too fast ram.

I am building a new pc, it is a skylake build with a msi gtx 1080 gaming x and asus maximus hero viii motherboard.

 

A company is building it for me, and they just mailed me that my ram vengeance lpx 3333mhz could cause system instability. They are going to try to change mpx settings to see if that will work.

 

But if it would cause any problems they offered me 2 options: 

- try to run the 3333mhz ram at a lower clockspeed

- chosing slower memory.

 

What should I do?

Chose slower ram as its cheaper

You might as well choose slower RAM, since it will probably be cheaper.

It could be the CPU, but changing it just because of RAM is not worth it. So my advice is reduce the speed a bit or swap the RAM with a slightly slower one? Most tests shows you wont see gains past 2800MHz anyway so why not grab/change speed to 2800MHz?

Sounds like they're just looking for an excuse to throw in cheaper RAM

Doubt it, as I bought all the components there. It would benifit them more if i spend even more.

i run 3866mhz ram just fine. 3333 is slow, i might be fast for x99, but not at all for z170. they dont know what they are on about.

Every ram kit has a JEDEC defined SPD profile on it. For DDR4, this profile is 2133 C15-15-15-36-2 (1.2v). You don't need to buy slower ram, as you can easily load that XMP profile. As for them saying it won't work, this tells me one very key thing. Whoever is building your PC, knows absolutely nothing about memory, and should not be a professional system builder. Anyone that has ever overclocked memory, knows how to make memory stable. They either are lazy, and do not want to put in the effort, or they genuinely do not know how.

 

It is a Skylake build, and that motherboard supports ram speeds up to 3800mhz, so we know trace topology of the board is designed to handle faster speeds. If that ram isn't working, then automatic training is failing, or he is lying to you. If automatic training is the issue, manually define RTL/IO-L offsets using RTL Init. This will fix terrible RTL/IO-L training, and allow you to better define tertiary timings for stability. Manually dial in voltage values (1.35vDIMM, 1.15 VCCIO, 1.15/1.2 VCCSA) and start benching. It's really not that difficult of a thing to do. 

 

It's your money, and you are free to choose how to resolve this situation. However, I would ask for a detailed reason as to why it will not work from them. Something tells me these people do not know why.
