huh? there are tons of configurations, and you can get a 970 (I even did a review of it on the forum if you look)

Or you could look at one of the MSI models with a 980

not a good way to put it, just because there's something better, it doesn't make your PC's performance any worse! but i also would recommend it, but it won't become 'obsolete' as /u/Pendragon said

tbh I would go ALIEN WARE. Yes it might be big and bulky but the power you get with an alienware out ways everything and razer is just the sticker

Obsolete just means out of date. And Maxwell will be out of date. A 1060 laptop will beat the 980m and rival the 980 laptop card. And because there is something better, it makes your relative PC performance worst.

Alienware is shit. For the same price, no MXM, locked bios. The one good thing about Alienware is a MASSIVE battery. One of my friends who doesn't care about performance or BGA or and just needs a 980m for 1080p and large battery said its fine, but huge. Razer is even worse than Alienware cause it overheats and throttles and that kills laptop components.

Current 15in gaming laptops that are good:

P640RE:

P650RG:

P750DM:

I wouldn't get 17inch because it's actually huge and not for mobile enough for school.

However, if you don't need blazing gaming performance and 980ms or 970ms, you can just get an XPS15.

Once Pascal releases, the 1060 will be better than the 980m and rival the 980 laptop. The 1070 will crush everything that's currently available. The 1080 will only be in 17inch laptops so meh.

Maybe so, but lets say [x] GPU runs a game at 60fps. [y] GPU comes out. [x] GPU still runs that game at 60fps.

Do you not get what I said? I never said your performance decreases, I said your relative performance decreases. There's no point in getting something obsolete right at the end of it's lifecycle. Think about it like this, just because xGPU can get 60FPS now doesn't mean it can get 60FPS in future games. Game developers notice that yGPU is available and start making games more intensive. Getting the 980m now (the currenet flagship mobile excluding 980 laptop), is the equivalent of a 970. That would literally be getting a 1050ti in the next gen.

If possible I would try and wait just a little bit longer for Pascal. I am in the exact same situation with scholarship money and I need to use it soon. There are other good brands that offer a little bit better value than those two. But between them I would take the Alienware. I know this comment will instantly be hated because everyone loves to hate but looking at it objectively I found one when I was at Best Buy's website within $50 of a Asus laptop. So while the BIOS might not be as good, most people don't use it on a laptop anyways. They have a really decent battery and while thicker they keep the system cooler. I wouldn't recommend their desktops but they do have some good laptops if you can ignore the hate.

They don't keep the system cooler compared to some of it's Clevo brethren which are better built, have a better bios (which allows for more stability and higher clocks), and cheaper. The only thing Alienware that reigns supreme is battery life, and that's because they use a MASSIVE battery and Optimus which is shit by itself. Optimus doesn't allow for GSync and you would need a MUX switch or MSHybrid switch to allow for both Optimus and dGPU only (allowing for Gysnc).

I misunderstood. Then you are 100% correct LOL. Alienware is fine but especially good with people who absolutely need time away from a socket.
