So, I'm pulling apart my friends ~5 year old PC that broke to try to salvage parts and I'm fairly certain that his video card is completely fine (it seems that he fried his cpu as one of the posts broke on his cooler and wasn't making good contact with the heat spreader), but I have no idea how to identify it. I've searched the s/n and the numbers on the heatsink (the number "P4C426.00" actually popped up an identical gpu [just the chip, no video card], but the only info I can get from those pages was that it's amd/ati and that number that I used to search for it.)

So far, the only thing I know is that it is AMD (duh), it's 1 GB, and I have a suspicion that it originally had a cover that had the info on it, because the grill on the I/O area leads me to believe that it was a rear-exhaust card.

In before, stick it in a computer and go to the settings.... blah blah blah. I don't have a working desktop here with me to do that, when I get home at a much later date, I would be able to do that, but I'd like to know before then.

Also, in a slightly unrelated note, could anyone think me to a post or inform me quickly about which parts could be safe to harvest from a dead PC? I'm almost positive that GPU could do no harm.

Thank you all, in advance!

ATI Radeon HD 5850 possibly?

Or is that a 6 at the second to last screenshot?

looks like a 5 , but it only says like 585 .

I think we need a clearer shot of the die .

5850 or 6850

Single 6-pin so those 2 are not likely. 5750? 6750? We need better shots at the die

It's a 1GB 6850 or 6870 . Found a picture of a 6850 die that looks exactly like yours.

6850 used 2x6-pin tho. That has 1x6-pin. (Source: I have one)

In theory , any part is fine to harvest; expect the dead part ( obviously because it won't work ) , and i also wouldn't pull out the psu , as those have a tendency to kill components.

It's a 6850 then.

The 5850 has 2 cf fingers and the 6850 only has 1.

you must have an aftermarket PCb . Reference only has one 6 pin:

Some of them do, but there are 6850's with only 1 6-pin connector.

And the fact it looks similar to a 6550 die, and only has 1 cf finger, i'm quite sure that's a 6850.

Moar powaah :D

I think an OC version must have been a must back then, 3 phases is just pathetic for a ref model :D

I'm happy things changed.

Those cards were insanely efficient. The reference coolers couldn't hit 70*C
