This is fucking stupid.

You guys have problems here you need to deal with before you explore past your own planet.

You're trying to lift heavy with really bad form and it's all going to come back to bite you in the ass.

Yeah, exploring, not colonizing.

What great achievements, taking your baggage from a previous relationship into a new one.

Also we certainly do not need another space race, acting alone no nation is rich enough to fund a real space exploration frontier, instead we all have to pool resources together and try to conquer space as a united front, it's the only way we will ever succeed. 

The US could be, if they stop being a socialist state and get rid of the welfare state and cut back defence spending.

i took NASA 8 years to but a guy on the moon and that was in the technological dark age so i don´t think 4 years is that far fetched.

The Outer Space Treaty was signed by The US Government (Among other nations - though not all of them, just most, eg: UN Nations signed, others did not, though we don't really care about the ones that didn't). A private company did not sign it. Therefore, if said company argued that it was not acting on the interests of the US, they could conceivably argue that they aren't bound by the treaty.

 

Besides, "decimate or pollute" is a very vague term. What does that mean? If simple litter (eg: leaving something behind on the surface, discarded) counted, then both the US and Russia have already breached that treaty, with the various space probes and the Lunar Lander that are all left behind on the Moon.

 

Setting up a Moon Colony, or using the Moon as a mine does not inherently mean it is being decimated or polluted. For example: There's no atmosphere, so who gives a shit if we're pumping out a bunch of toxic gases into the Lunar "air" (or more accurately, vacuum). So we can't pollute the air, because there isn't any, and humans would already instantly die without pressurized habitats.

What are you talking about? Why are you so bitter?

 

Do you have ANY IDEA how much better your PERSONAL LIFE is because of space exploration? There are innumerable every day technologies, gadgets, and inventions which all came out of the space program. The amount of straight up monetary/economic gain we've gotten from the Space Program outweighs the cost by an enormous magnitude. Simply going by past experiences, investing in Space Exploration is a super good investment.

 

Without the space program, past or present, your current life would be worse. Your cost of living would be higher. Your quality of life would be worse. Many inventions for which you no doubt take for granted and use every single day would not exist.

I wouldn't expect a rescue mission as they are agreeing to live there until they die and hopefully reproduce. I mean we have the technology but made they would classify it as not settling or claiming but temporary. I don't know I guess we will see

colonizing space will be very important for resources like tin and other rare earth that are used in electronics. and we have to start building up the infrastructure before we run out of the materials we need to do so. and it will be much easier to run asteroid mining operation from the moon than from earth.

My point was that MarsOne colonists - if they ever managed to actually reach Mars, would never be there long enough to breed and reproduce. I'm saying that if by some miracle, MarsOne swindles enough people out of their money to fund the launch, shit will go horribly wrong, they won't have planned properly, and they won't have enough money to properly keep the mission funded. The colonists will get there and within 6 months, something catastrophic will go wrong, requiring a Mission Abort - which, as you correctly point out, there is no Mission Abort. MarsOne is a one way mission. Therefore, if things go horribly wrong, the colonists are fucked unless NASA/other space agencies can launch a rescue mission.
