What is the download speed while online gaming?

It depends on the multiplayer game.

Some games are happy with less than 1 KB/s in both directions.

Some games upload at about 10-25 KB/s (basically they send to the server your position in the game and keys pressed, mouse movement) but receive more information from the server (20-100 KB/s) because the server sends updates about the position of all players on the map and other things.

 

The traffic of most games is usually very small, latency is more important. Connections that are limited to low speeds usually also have high latencies, so it's a good idea to have a decent internet connection, something like at least 1-4 mbps, for smaller latency.

 

Some games even tell you how much traffic they make. For example, in source games like Half-Life 2 or Left 4 Dead 1/2 , you can simply open the developer console and type net_graph 1 (or 2 or 3, but 1 shows basic info, enough for your needs)

Hey guys,

 

I have a pretty simple question, what is the download speed while gaming? I currently have really bad internet which only pulls 125kbps, but it actually is good enough to play any online game. The only time I ever run into problems is when someone else hops on the internet too; of course ping skyrockets. I'm wondering because my current phone plan includes 5gb of hot spotting, and I'm wondering if I should just use it when someone else is home. Also, after that 5gb is up, I get throttled to 64kpbs which I know is half as fast as my current home internet. 

Just wondering if anyone has experience out there with this.

Gaming for source engine games or minecraft should be at least 200kbps. If I monitor traffic while playing csgo, I use around 600kbps-1mbps of upload and download bandwidth.

I can play CSGO on 600Kb/s fine but you are right. Someone else joins ping is over 1000. Just yesterday I think someone was downloading something or uploading and my ping got over 10,000ms

It depends on the game, but remember people played online games with dial up. Ping is more important than d/l and u/l speeds.

It depends on the multiplayer game.

Some games are happy with less than 1 KB/s in both directions.

Some games upload at about 10-25 KB/s (basically they send to the server your position in the game and keys pressed, mouse movement) but receive more information from the server (20-100 KB/s) because the server sends updates about the position of all players on the map and other things.

 

The traffic of most games is usually very small, latency is more important. Connections that are limited to low speeds usually also have high latencies, so it's a good idea to have a decent internet connection, something like at least 1-4 mbps, for smaller latency.

 

Some games even tell you how much traffic they make. For example, in source games like Half-Life 2 or Left 4 Dead 1/2 , you can simply open the developer console and type net_graph 1 (or 2 or 3, but 1 shows basic info, enough for your needs)
