Encrypted Traffic

I am still trying to figure this out. So a VPN encrypts your traffic so this prevents prying eyes from looking at it and so on. So why can't we just encrypt all our traffic like a VPN? I am guessing it has to do with decrypting and the VPN server is the only thing that can interpret it.

Just keeping this here as a HTTPS encrypts data for the average joe.  I think it costs money for the website though.

 

VPN gives the option for additional security, like RSA tokens, access to recognized computer hardware... etc.  Good for people who want to access office networks remotely, but bad for people who just casually visit websites.

In a nutshell, encryption only works if the endpoint (ie: the decryptor) understands your encryption.  https, VPNs, ssh, etc., are examples where both the client and the server understand the encryption, and have exchanged certificates with the decryption codes accordingly (ie: public keys).

https is  basically encrypted communication between your browser and the remote website. 

Your browser talks to the remote website and exchange a bit of information which is then used by both computers to encrypt the conversation between them.  So, someone between the website and you in theory can't decode what's on the page, can't insert ads or change the text on the page and so on.

With http 2.0, encryption is kind of mandatory, but not everyone is so keep on implementing this new version of http which requires encryption because there's more processing power required to encrypt all this communication between the computers, so if a website has lots of visitors, the website owner needs to rent more powerful computers just to be able to keep the website running as fast as before.

 

A vpn is a more universal solution. It basically creates an encrypted channel between your computer and another computer, so basically you appear on the Internet as if you're located at the address of the remote computer. Anything you do on your computer related to internet is encrypted and sent to the remote computer and the remote computer does what you did on your computer, so if you access a website that website thinks you're at that remote location.

Because the ISP can detect it's an encrypted connection or not, and therefore simply throttle any encrypted connection.

Also, the ISP may not know the CONTENTS, what is transferred between you and the remote computer (the website), but the ISP can determine to what IP your computer has connected to.

An encrypted connection doesn't hide where your computer connects. The address of the website is public, otherwise people wouldn't be able to access it in the first place. Every website is served by a computer or several computers, and each of those computers has an IP address, so it can be easy to determine that if a connection is made to IP address 1.2.3.4, then there's a high chance user is connecting to website XYZ. 

This kind of detection is harder to accomplish with solutions like Cloudfront : a website can use Cloudfront as an intermediary between users and the website  so if the ISP tries to determine the website's IP address, they basically get an IP belonging to Cloudfront. Since Cloudfront acts as an intermediary for tens of thousands, throttling the IPs belonging to Cloudfront may throttle all those sites.
