1. Decide on a purpose for the PC.

2. Decide on a realistic budget to fulfill that purpose.

3. Pick out your parts. Use a website like pcpartpicker.com

4. Make sure all of your components are compatible (PC Part Picker will help with this)

5. Buy.

6. Build.

7. Enjoy.

Could you not just keep the boxes?

Yes, keep the boxes and write down every component and its serial number on a sheet of paper.

Some S/N or P/N won't be on the box.

Take your time: Never rush things because you're too impatient to turn on your computer for the first time.

Think about cable management in advance, especially if you're using a non-modular power supply.

Make sure all of your ram slots are seated properly, either by looking at the locks or using a small level bubble.

Do not close your case before your first boot: you may need to reopen it after anyway because you may have missed something or misplaced one of those hideous power/led connectors.

And of course, do NOT plug the power cable in when you're going to have your hands inside the case.
