Hello there,

I recently finished building a completely new PC from scratch and my i7-6700k is currently at stock speeds. I was wondering what was the highest but also the safest overclock speed. I want to overclock it a bit to get better performance out of it but I don't want anything crazy either. My goal is not to reach an OC record, just get better performance out of it while still keeping it rather cool. I have a Noctua NH-D15 if that helps you in answering it.  I was thinking 4.2Ghz, but maybe I could get more without pushing it.

CPU: Intel Core i9-10900K  MOBO: ROG MAXIMUS XII FORMULA GPU: 2080ti Hall of Fame 10th anniversary limited edition  PSU: Asus ROG THOR 1200W  COOLER: Optimus foundation black acetal RADS: 3x EKWB CoolStream PE 360  LOOP: EKWB torque HDC fittings / EKWB ZMT 15,9/9,5mm / EKWB CryoFuel Clear MONITOR: Acer predator X34

4.2 is the Turbo boost clock. You should be able to hit 4.5ghz without issue at around 1.3-1.325v. I have mine on water at 4.7ghz at 1.375v without any issues. the NH-D15 is probably the best air cooler you can get. Once you get it to 4.5, take and run Aida64 for an hr to ensure its stable. if it is, try bumping it up as long as your temps dont get to high. Try and keep your temps around 70-75c at load when running Aida and you will be golden.

Well, this depends a bit on the silicon lottery, but I would say that you could probably reach at least 4.5 or if you got lucky even 4.7+ without pushing it too much.

With that cooler you can overclock alot out of it! It depends on the amount you want form youre cpu, because you could find the highest clock speed it can do, but will sacrifice fan speed and thus noise. But you have a 6700k so overclock it definitely! But to answer the question yes 4.2 Ghz sounds okay, but why not push it more!

Without tweaking the voltage, 4.3-4.4GHz should be easy to reach if your chip isn't complete crap. Past that, you might need to add some voltage to keep the CPU stable

CPU : i7 8700k @5GHz, GPU : ASUS GTX 1080 Ti STRIX, RAM : 2x8Go 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance, MB : ASUS Prime Z370-A, PSU : CM V850, Case :  NZXT S340, CPU Cooler : NZXT Kraken x62, Monitor : Acer Predator XB271HU 27" 1440p 165Hz, OS : Windows 10 Home 64 bits

While I'm not a complete expert (Actually going to start building my first PC soon), from what I've read you should be able to get it to 4,5Ghz at least with a proper cooler (which you definitely have with the NH-D15). Like legacy99 already said above...

What batch is your CPU? There are charts showing over clocks and voltages from processors from each batch, could give you more of an idea of how far your processor can go.

You can probably get to 4.7GHz with ~1.37V. 4.5GHz should be lower voltage.

Here's a list of a bunch of batches and their results (make sure you look at 6700k only).
