This is a valid point of which I'm trying to figure out. Since I have never used/experienced gsync it's hard for me to tell, so realistically a gtx 1070 with gsync I'd imagine I'd get around 45-60fps? This is purely based of benchmarks I've seen in the last week where as a 1080 seems to average 60+ on the same 3440x1440 resolution. I don't mind dropping settings a bit can any one say if it's a big difference in dropping them at resolution? I'm used to 1080p gaming haven't even see 2k in the flesh as of yet

I'd be actually expecting the GTX 1070 to run most games at 60 FPS or above at maxed out settings, especially if you overclocked it. For more demanding games such as GTA V + The Witcher 3, I'd be expecting an average of 50-60FPS with some dips here and there if you have a beefy i7.

Resolution > graphics settings. It depends on who are you talk to but some people can't tell the difference between high and ultra settings.

Hey all, new member here!
Looking for some feedback on a new build, I'm deciding whether to go a gtx 1070 and Acer predator x34 or get a gtx 1080 and something like the Samsung s34e790c. I'm pretty firm for the 21:9 ratio. I'm picking all my parts up next Wednesday when I'm finally home from work,  already paid for a gtx 1070 can change no problems and pay the difference.
I can't decide whether the better monitor with gsync and stock 100hz on the predator or getting the extra performance from the 1080. Unfortunately I can't afford to get both! Would the gtx 1070 handle 3440x1440p good enough? . I don't game competitively or anything
Any feedback would awesome!

This is a full fresh build, I've been using a laptop for gaming for the last few years because I work away from home so it's been a long time since I've had a desktop!

I would get the 1080, unless things have changed since I last researched, the predator x34 was a very faulty monitor. Many people were unable to reach 100hz without artifacts and stuff.

Dude Honestly Just get the cheaper option... I think in this case its the 1070/x34 if my numbers are right of the top of my head... You are going to love it, and the resell value is so good for GPU trust me (bought 970 for $350, sold for $325 on ebay after a year, bought 980 for $350 (Bestbuy with employee discount and a fuck ton of rewards) and sold recently for $345), so once you get the 1070 and the x34, save the wrappers and shit in the box and when you have enough moolah for the 1080... sell the 1070 and purchase that shit... and don't think shit sells slowly, it sells like within a few hours or days at worst.

I have seen mixed reviews with this aswell although not too many where I'm from (I'm in Australia) wish we had US prices here a gtx 1070 strix is going for $820 plus. I will take that into consideration as the predator is pretty hard to stomach price wise

Money is too much of an issue really just not used to forking out so much for a monitor! And not sure what benefits I'd get from gsync and a gtx 1070 compared to a gtx 1080 and no gsync I'd say that the 1080 will obviously perform better. I've literally paid for everything already but I work in remote locations then fly home so just waiting till next so I can start building

Not exactly....  Did you read my first post? , I have paid for everything already,  besides a monitor I was already planning on spending round bout a grand on a monitor. So for me to change to a 1080 will only cost around 300 bucks. If I keep the gtx 1070 however and got the predatorpredator x34 that would cost me an extra $650 ish. Thats where I was stuck was trying to decide what would be best 1070 and gsync or 1080 and no gsync. Price isn't a deal breaker but it's a factor obviously. This is a full new build no carry over parts at all

Ok in that case I think that you made the right choice... So As of right now ur getting the 1070 and the samsung.. nice.. test it, and see how it is

If you want MOAR then get the 1080.. Simple

The general consensus I'm getting here is that G-Sync = not worth it over the GTX 1080. I disagree, there's a noticeable fluidity with variable refresh rate tech such as G-Sync and FreeSync that makes a very significant factor in determining in which monitor to buy. Many users (me included) have concluded that it's a well worth investment and we wouldn't be able to play on a non G-Sync/FreeSync monitor again.

I suggest getting the GTX 1070 with the X34. Sure, it might be more expensive and you have to turn down some settings for a solid framerate, but G-Sync is worth it in my eyes.

Oh and yes I know 3440x1440 is more taxing than actual 1440p :) (2k)

I think I'm just over thinking it honestly seems to be a lot of extreme opionions I've read mostly from more hardcore gamers of which I am not

I'll be running I7 6700kI7 6700k,  z170 mobo (Rog impact) 16g 2400 cas 14 ddr4 ram, AsusAsus gtx 1070 strix oc. So I should be fine. I've seen the non gsync monitors overclock pretty well even over 85hz on the one I'm considering
