Appalled by Nvidia pricing

I'm still seeing 960s at $200 and 970s around $280.

Yet they have 1060s in stock which are selling from $249 - $280 for non FE.

980s are still around $400 and 980 ti are around $430 while the 1070s start from $420 for non FE.

Who the hell would buy the older gpus when the newer and better ones aren't much more?

 

I'm using a friend's gpu at the moment I eventually want to buy one that's at least 980 caliber.  But the current pricing situation really stinks.

It is a bit stupid to buy last generation graphics cards when they are not much cheaper than new ones anyway. The 1070 has a lot more new technologies than the 980.

agreed, however from the sellers point of view if they can still sell maxwell cards for their RRP despite being outdated why wouldn't they? 

 

A lot of less tech savvy people would go out and buy a maxwell or even kepler based card and be none the wiser, just take a look at how many pre-built gaming pc's are out there with 780's and 780ti's, obviously people still buy them anyway

i'm thinking the retailers already paid for the GPUs, so if they drop the prices too low they will make a loss, so they choose to keep it at that price and hope some sucker will get it over the newer card.

Just wait a couple weeks/months until all retailers are fully stocked with the new generation -> you will get a 980 for around $250 IMO (at least on ebay).

The 980tis have gone for $389 which is a steal when it was a Classy card. You can OC a 980ti to beat a 1080 FE card

I'm using a friend's gpu at the moment I eventually want to buy one that's at least 980 caliber.  But the current pricing situation really stinks.

The people that are buying them are the people that either have one and want to add another or just dont know any better.  You have to think that not everyone is as tech savvy as the people on this forum. Not everyone knows that you can swap out your old GPU, HDD's, SSD's Power supply's with new versions of hardware so they get the exact same thing they had because they know it works with there system.

I'm pretty sure the retailers paid a certain price for the old cards and won't sell them at a loss or lower profit margin until NVIDIA gives them some sort of incentive.

What I really wonder about is this $100 price hike... Not justifiable in terms of inflation, I was looking forward to a 1080ti as my option for a single card capable of 4k for all games (tomb raider uses 10gb+ at 4k) but with the price structure where it is now its looking like it will be $900+ :S 

 

Think I will wait to see how the 490 looks. I have never had any brand loyalty between red and green, I like the driver updates on the green side and I like the raw horse power that make AMD's cards usually last longer, I just go for whatever is the sensible option at the time

Because NVIDIA is currently king and someone has to pay for the increased manufacturing costs of going to 16nm.

 

Despite what people think about going to a smaller node means higher yield, die sizes haven't really gone down. So you get the same same yield for each node and thus the same amount of product.

Its not nvidias fault, its retailers, and they cant do much about it

Profit margins on hardware are VERY low - lets say there is 10% profit in a $400 graphics card, if they knock it down to $360 they are now making no money but its not low enough to compete with the new cards

 

so they have to sell them at a loss or just to break even (or if lucky a small profit) 

 

there is only so low they can afford to go, they still have to recoup the money spent on the stock

I understand what you guys are saying about wanting maximum profit.  However, gpus are like bread in a bakery.  The longer you keep them on the shelf, the lesser their value will be until that day comes when nobody will buy them at cost and you'll be taking a huge loss.

 

Take the 980s for example.  If a 1060 sees it eye to eye in performance but is about $150 cheaper, one can get 2 1060s and SLI it and only spend about $100 more over a 980.  But that's right, Nvidia snipped SLI so I can't do that.

Retailers are probably still selling cards based on their performance tier and price point. It makes sense to sell a GTX 980 Ti at around $400-$450 because well, that's the top price for a GTX 1070 and they're both on the same performance tier.

 

And if people are buying cards at that price, they have no reason to lower it. The same reason why practically every GTX 1080 on Amazon is going for $800+

While I agree with your logic it is does not change the fact that it is not good value for the customer, 1060 not having SLI is IMHO an example of where nvidia's pricing structure does not consistently represent good value for money.

But a lot of us would agree that two midrange cards are not worth it compared to a single high end card due to a multitude of problems such as:

  • They consume more power and generating more heat
  • Not all games see a performance boost and not the same performance boost. And in some cases, you get worse performance.
  • VRAM doesn't add up (so you're getting effectively a GTX 1080 with 6GB of VRAM)
  • When you want to upgrade, you have two cards to deal with.
  • Microstuttering

All for what, a slightly better price/performance ratio?

and I am one of those people as well, and yes I am aware through personal experience what the problems are for SLI set ups, however the specific problems you have raised have become much less of any issue for many (depending on what games you play) over the last 2 or 3 years. I will not go into addressing each of the problems you have listed as I do not want to hijack this thread with an age old argument that rears its head over and over again on forums.

 

BUT there is no real logical explanation that I find satisfactory for removing SLI compatibility on the 1060 other than the price /performance problem when compared to a 1080.

 

It is just interesting to me as I think it is to many who are following this that the same year Nvidia try a new pricing structure is the same year they start removing SLI compatibility on mid range cards.

The other question to consider is how many people out of the entire market actually do this? Because if the percentage of people who buy two midrange (oh sorry, these are now "budget" GPUs) cards is peanuts, there's no compelling reason to continue supporting it unless there's an easy enough solution to the problem.

 

Like here's an example, Microsoft found an easy enough solution to backwards compatibility for the XB1. Sony hasn't for the PS4. Backwards compatibility isn't much of money maker at all for consoles.
