I kind of have the same question. I've used both and prefer elements because zooming in and out on the timeline seems much simpler. But i'm a total noob so hopefully someone else can explain it.

Elements is the cheap garbage no one uses. If you use it you are looked down upon. No it is horrible compared to the Pro. Same with PS. It is like a kids version that sucks

Trial/free version vs paid version. Lack of features, less optimized, easier to beginners, lacks in depth useful features. There is a reason why no pros use it. I will say it is better then windows media maker

I just use it to trim videos and very basic things so for me a one time $70 purchase is much more appropriate than $20/30 a month for cc.

I kind of have the same question. I've used both and prefer elements because zooming in and out on the timeline seems much simpler. But i'm a total noob so hopefully someone else can explain it.

 
 

I havn't seen elemnts for some years, my main editor is Avid Media Composer but use Premier Pro for some projects.  

The difference is fairly simple.... elements is a domestic editor.  It is simple enough for non technical people who want to edit home videos the ability not to get lost in a professional editor.  It has simplifed effects that require almost no perameters to adjust to get a result.  It also has a lot of what we call "domestic effects"

The pro version is a proper editor with up to 24 video tracks chroma key's for green screen, multicamera editing, an efects keyframe editor, etc

its not that elements is a stripped down version of pro, because its not, its a whole different editor.  The difference is about as big as Wordpad and MS Word, and notepad is like Movie Maker.

 

It does not automaticaly edit photo's into a slideshow.  

So if you are thingking of just putting a few family videos on facebook the elements is great for the occational non professional....

anything else use the pro version.

BTW: to zoom on on the timeline alt+mousewheel or assign "zoom to frame" on a shortcut key.
