Build Check

Hi, I am a novice PC build enthusiast from Australia who is looking at getting my first gaming rig. Due to my lack of experience I have decided to outsource the build to a custom PC manufacturer (Scorptec), based in Australia. My parts budget is $3600 but can stretch to $3800 if need be. I have already made a list of desired components and was just looking for some feedback before I finalize my purchase.

Whst do you plan to use this for? Which games, resolution, number of monitors...

Mostly ARMA 3 hoping for average 60fps at 1080p 1 monitor also want to slightly future proof for newer games eg BF1 etc

Go with regular ssd and ge 1080 insted then. Its just crazy that your ssd costs more than your gpu

That SSD ... I like it! Fast porn :P

Otehrwise, for 1080p gaming that's overkill and you could get much cheaper build still handling 1080p at 60fps like a boss.

But if you can afford it why not.

Also if you might ever upgrade to 1440p monitor or 1080 144Hz or 4K or 8K or 16K. Well in that case it makes sense :D

Hi there :) Welcome to the community!

The build looks really powerful and is a big overkill for a regular gaming system for the settings that you are going after.

You could easily lower the specs for the CPU, PSU, Case, number of fans and memory.

Most games would be well off with 8GB of memory and the rest would easily work on max settings with 16GB so I'd start with a single 8GB memory stick and see how that goes and then add another if needed. You an always add more whenever you need more memory. :)

Though there are some CPU-intensive AAA games out there, most games would run well without bottlenecks on the lower-end CPU so you can save some funds there too.

Have in mind that if this is a solely gaming PC, your games won't benefit from running off a SSD. The only benefit that games get from being installed on a SSD is the shorter loading times. Storage's performance doesn't affect the FPS nor the graphics. Only games such as MMOs and Open World games can have their surrounding textures load faster and smoother but that won't affect their quality nor the FPS. I'd consider a far less expensive SSD (and with a lower capacity) and consider some level of redundancy for the internal storage (such as a RAID1 array from two WD Red drives)

You are not very likely to need all those fans as you should be getting adequate cooling while gaming with the regular case fans on your system.

You can push the remaining funds towards an even better GPU as this is arguably the most important part in a gaming build.

Surely, having a more powerful setup than currently needed isn't a bad thing but you don't have to have this huge budget for a regular 60FPS 1080p build. :)

Get the kraken x61 as a cpu cooler. Get a PNY CS2211 as ssd. Get a 16 gb ram kit. You don't need that psu. Get a xfx 550watt.use the saved money to get a gtx1080.

Thanks for all the feedback.  The general sense seems to be the build is overkill for my requirements, especially the SSD but also RAM and PSU. I found all your suggestions helpful and am reconsidering these aspects of the build. Thanks again.
