Cyanogenmod is a custom ROM (which pretty much means a custom version of android) which aims to give you an experience as close to 'stock android' as possible (along with a few extra stuff as well). Check out some youtube videos to see if you like the look of it, if so you might want to consider installing it. It's not a very easy task though, so if you don't feel up to it you could wait for their installer that should be released some time, it will make it much easier.

i highly recomend hedding over to XDA-DEVELOPERS.COM

there you can search your device and then go to original Android Development and find if there is a compatible Cynogenmod ROM for you device.

please dont hate on me(other members) but XDA Is the best place to find out about these things.

as for what cynogenmod in short CM its a version of android that is the closest to what google developed. so its based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project)

CM version of Android usually adds some extra functionality over the stock android that comes with your phone in this case Sense X (dont know the version your phone have).

for you to install CM on to you phone you will have to unlock you bootloader and then flash CM. this differs from device to device and not all devices can be bootloader unlocked because sometimes service providers prevent you from doing it. but you can always try.

good luck. make sure you read a lot before you do anything. head to XDA-DEVELOPERS.COM

the HTC incredible is ancient

are u sure u have that ?

maybe u have the incredible 2 or incredible S

go with  CM7 (2.3) build that is much mature (and lighter)

download this

http://mirror.symnds.com/software/cm/jenkins/21410/cm-7-20130301-NIGHTLY-inc.zip

then follow this

the HTC incredible is ancient

the cyanogenmod 4.1 build seems buggy

go with this (4.2 build)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778190

an AOSP build that has more support than CM

or u can go with an old  CM7 (2.3) build that is much mature (and lighter)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916881

i would try both the AOSP and the CM because i fear that JB will slow this phone down.

try and see which one gives you the best experience.

going with the latest OS version does not always give a positive change.

It will definitely make your phone feel snappier, especially on an older device. It removes all the bloatware that HTC and your carrier put on it, so you're running pure android. All your apps will work on it, you don't have to worry about that.

i made that mistake with one of my phones it had GB  and it was fine... but the OEM them self came out with a update for ICS and i just flashed it even though my carrier didn't issue and update, and after that it was so slow i just gave the phone away and got a new one so i can play with the newest stuff. (and turns out rogers dont like to let their customers unlock their phones bootloader, even when its unlocked)  edited i meant SIM/Network Unlocked

yes you will loose all the data. but your contacts should be synced to your google account but make sure you back it up to your SIM. also please have a full battery when you are doing any kind of flashing. you dont know how much trouble you can get in to if your phone dies in the middle of a flash. also use a reliable cable and a USB port. (no USB 3.0) and everything should be fine.

from what i know HTC is one of the hardest to root and bootloader unlock.

i would try either one of these methods.

http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/531353-how-unlock-downgrade-achieve-s-off-htcdev.html#post4227454

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258

i suggest you to make a xda-dev account and ask the questions that you run into. but my fear is that since this is a older device you might not get any respond.

but since this is a older device these questions might already be answered.

i wish i can help you more but with out the device with me i have no way of referencing any thing....
